DH suffers from horrendous hayfever and we have found that avoiding red wine, beer and wheat makes a tremendous difference.

We are fine with breakfast and dinner, but lunches are a real problem. He works in London, so usually gets a sandwich for lunch. I'm willing to prepare a packed lunch but he needs a lot more than say salad with a bit of chicken/tuna etc.

Any ideas?

sapnish omelette (tortilla), have you tried spelt bread?

tatt · 31/03/2008 15:24

if you have a breadmaker make gluten free bread or bread rolls and freeze until needed (Doves GF bread flour has a recipe). Otherwise how about rice/potato salad for a bit of extra filling, or add oat cakes?

amidaiwish · 31/03/2008 15:41

no haven't tried spelt bread - will give that a go. We did try some wheat free bread from Waitrose (purple/yellow wrapper) but it was so dense, he hated it. He lives on ryvita in the summer!

will have a go at tortilla, rice/potato salad. Add oat cakes, and almonds to fill him up.

Is couscous wheat?

couscous is wheat but polenta is generally ok should only be corn. My other half has just been diagnosed wheat, egg, soya and dairy intolerant by dermatologist for excema and I've had to become an overnight whiz at that crazy section of the supermarket i never used to go near.

oh sainsburys do a pasta using lupine flour tastes nearly as good as the real thing and wheat free so he could have a pasta salad?

Tacos and some (discovery) tortillas are also generally wheat free but you need to read ingredients carefully

mmm waitrose do wheat free jam tarts by Kelkin for a little treat

mspotatochip · 31/03/2008 16:25

amidaiwish · 31/03/2008 16:36

no problem! rice and quinoa fine.

We bought some quinoa but haven't tried yet that crazy blond lasy called gillian on c4 put me off (mmm don't want to get mumsnet in trouble like that baby sleep woman)

t'other half is a devotee of rice cakes and hummus but has lost loads of weight am trying to steer him off rice cakes as they are not v sunstantial

home made gf bread is nothing like what you get in the shops. I bought gf bread once and would only do that in an emergency. Unfortunately my gf bread does tend to be crumbly but I'm not a good cook.

If you can find Mrs Crimble's chocolate brownies they are great - and filling They would put weight back on quickly!
