Carb alternatives for toddler with wheat allergy

Hi all

My 12m son has recently started reacting to a number of different foods, wheat being one of them and blood tests have shown a mild positive for wheat allergy.

Does anyone have any good carb alternatives for wheat allergy? Seems it’s wider than just gluten unfortunately. Breakfast is tricky as he’s also iron deficient so we need iron fortified cereals, but he won’t eat scrambled egg or porridge. We are stuck on Rice Krispies!

carb alternatives for lunch and dinner also welcome please, otherwise he will be eating potatoes with everything 🤦🏻‍♀️ and he’s not overly keen on rice.

Has the wheat allergy been diagnosed by an allergy specialist doctor? Ideally you'd have been referred to a paediatric dietician for advice, can you ask for this?

Kellogs Krispies do have gluten in them, just wanted to say in case you weren’t aware.

Asda do very good own brand GF flours, my cakes work perfectly using them.
Would he eat pancakes for breakfast using GF flour?

Iirc some supermarkets do croquette potatoes that are GF but you would have to check your supermarket.

If you Google Paleo lunches you will find lots of recipes, they are gluten free.

Google Becky Excell. She has lots of recipes but she also does a accidentally GF list shop by shop so, for example, Google Becky Excell accidentally gluten free Sainsbury’s & you will get a list of treats and items that are safe.

Ah thank you both! No I didn’t realise on Rice Krispies 🤦🏻‍♀️very new to the allergy world as neither me or husband have any at all.

The allergies were diagnosed via RAST blood tests at the hospital. The paediatrician can’t see us for another 3 months though to talk through the results. Some of the positives were stronger, but wheat came back 0.64 which I was told is mildly positive. We are hoping to get a dietician referral next as he also tested positive for peanut, soya and peas. He hasn’t ever reacted to peas or soya before, but wheat and peas we have noticed a rash on his neck each time. We will push for that dietician referral 🤞🏼

Rice cakes and corn cakes are generally wheat free. They make a good base for sandwiches. Also corn tortillas - old el paso do some. Popcorn is okay! Oat based breakfast eg porridge..

Will he eat veg? Asparagus dunked into dippy egg is a good breakfast and would give him iron too.

Definitely look at advice for people with coeliac disease. Anything gluten free should be safe for a wheat allergy (unless it contains de-glutenated wheat, which is rare and will be labelled). Other grains are often cross contaminated so be careful with barley, rye and oats too (check they are gluten/wheat free).

As you've realised, false positives are common for IgE blood tests so when the paed takes a clinical history it should be clearer which things he is actually allergic to.

If you're not already, keep a food/drink/meds diary as it helps identify patterns.

But ideally no popcorn until he's older as it's a big choking risk!

My son has coeliac disease and eats GF versions of almost everything - it's a lot easier when they haven't had the 'real stuff!'.

Sainsbury's do a brown rice pasta which is the closest gluten free pasta to actual pasta we found
We used quinoa instead of cous cous
Our paediatrician suggest rice pudding instead of porridge when we were weaning

We struggled with other gluten/wheat free products as they were egg based and my daughter is allergic to egg. Thankfully she out grew her gluten/wheat intolerance quite quickly

This is us unfortunately, along with egg allergy and others. My sympathies

We basically buy everything gluten free, in particular Schar brand. They do a lovely frozen bread roll that's great for trips on the go as it defrosts in 1-2 hrs.

One thing to be careful of is condiments, we stick to big brands and carefully check new ones. I.e. ketchup in those massive squeeze bottles in a local cafe can have all sorts in it.

Soy sauce swap for Tamari
Agree on sainsbury own brand free from pasta, it is v v good
Ocado online shopping as they have good labelling
M&S made without wheat range is excellent

Lots of cross contamination unfortunately with oats and other flours so only from dedicated free from brands.

There's a nice weetabix dupe called nutri-bex made with sorghum, my son has this most days and cornflakes from whole earth.
