DD has been dairy free since a baby (now 2.5). She is on hypoallergenic milk but we have been trying to introduce a bit of cheese into her diet as its one of the few things she will eat. Get the impression she is tolerating goats cheese better than cows.

Most of the official literature says there isnt all that much diff between the 2 but anecdotally i read of quite a few people saying goats is ok where cows isnt?

We have been having problems with ears too - i read that goats milk doesnt produce as much mucus?

thanks
alice

My BIL couldn't drink cows milk as a baby and young child but he was fine on goats milk.

I couldn't drink cows milk as a child (grew out of it at 7) but was fine on goats milk, cheese etc.

My DS2 (age 2.6) was on goats milk from a baby (including goats milk formula after bfing) as it's what we drink in our house. However he still developed ezcema and the only thing that controls it is a dairy-free diet. So he is now on rice milk.

My lo also can take goats milk but not cows milk.consultant at allergy clinic said he has cows milk intolerance rather than lactose intolerance.he also had problems with ears which have gone now.do you give your lo's any calcium supplements?i am concerned he isnt getting enough as only drinks about 150ml a day.

We gave DS powdered goats milk in preference to cows when he was small - DW was worried about dairy products. Now his preferred drink of all is cows milk.

MeMySonAndI · 29/03/2008 17:59

DS is allergic to milk and... can't tolerate goats products either. I have been told that most children who have a real allergy to cows dairy are unlikely to tolerate goat milk.

my kids are much better on goats milk.

they weren't allergic - but cows milk seemed to trigger gastric problems and skin problems. My dd (4) used to refuse milk and dairy entirely - but now drinks a decent amount of goats milk

My Dd had eczema quite badly till she was about 2 (is now 4 and completely free, thank goodness).

We never found a "magic bullet" that caused it - people who used to say "oh, we just cut out [x] and she was fine" used to make me . What we did find was a regime that made her eczema tolerable, and the doctor agreed it was a question of playing around and constantly adjusting that.

For DD, the "rawer" the milk, the worse the response - so cow's milk, and cream were absolutely the worse, and hard cheese gave the least bad response. For DD she could tolerate goat's milk a bit better than cow's milk - and the best thing was that hard goat's cheese didn't really cause a flare up if used sparingly, and also if cooked.

The doctor told me that the view was that in a lot of senses they were the same, and that was pretty much the official line, but he had heard enough anecdotal stuff to suggest that some people could tolerate it better and it may be worth a try.

GentleOtter · 07/04/2008 17:28

I'm just waiting for my new milking goat and the little one will be given the milk straight from the goat the same as the other two were at one year.
The older ones has eczema up to one year and were weaned from breast to goat - I bathed them in it too (hence cheaper getting a goat than buying the milk)...they never had eczema again after being on a caprine diet.
I used to make soft cheese for them with the milk or curds and whey by adding vegetable rennet.
ps A well known MP has been on goats milk for the last 18 months for his eczema and has noticed a massive improvement in his skin. He no longer scratches his hands when he talks.

thanks alot everyone. We seem to be doing fine with hard goats cheese which is a huge relief. Not tried anything else yet but its a start....

just to add my bit (rather late) DS aged 2 is also on goats milk but not cows. After me saying 'I'm sure he has tummy ache' all the time when he was tiny and fully bf, it became very obvious when weaning that cow's milk or cheese gave him shocking wind. Goat's milk seems fine, and that is what we all drink now. It's not an allergy, it just gives him terrible tummy ache and wind. Wish I'd worked it out sooner - no-one ever suggested it either

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/04/2008 09:16

Dd couldn't tolerate cows, goats or sheep milk products until she was about 20 months (not even if I ate them, as she's still bf), but is now ok with all of these.

I guess if it was even just 5 or 10% of children who could tolerate one but not the other, it would still be enough to hear about anecdotally.
