Katflowers · 23/03/2008 20:24

My 4 1/2 month old daughter has developed little red patches on her shoulders and all over her back and more recently behind her knees. I have started using Oilatum in her daily bath and diprobase cream but can I use Hydrocortisone 1% too?

This is my first post - can you tell me how to find a list of all the abreviations?

Thanks

Welcome to MN Kat.

The acronym list is at the top under useful stuff, just above the ad for infaderm.

In answer to your Q. If your Dr has prescribed it then yes. We've been using HyD 1% on and off since DD was about that age.

scottishmummy · 23/03/2008 20:31

go to GP get advice and prescription.

YummyMam · 23/03/2008 20:53

Definitely check it out with your GP first, but you should be fine with HC cream. We use it regularly on DD's face. On the body, you can get away with a lot more!

Make sure you use loads of moisturiser all over her body (not just on the dry bits) and keep using it when it's cleared up.

My 12 week old was prescribed HC cream for his eczema but it was only 0.1% strength. I would not use 1% cream without checking with my GP first.

Bouncingturtle · 23/03/2008 21:04

Oh and I also use 100% Olive Oil as well.

bubblepop · 23/03/2008 22:57

hello, ask you gp if you can use the hc cream,im sure i did with mine at this age but im not sure about the strength. also, have you tried AVEENO cream? its really good for the face, expensive to buy but i managed to get some on prescription.

cheeseontoast · 24/03/2008 02:11

My DDs prescription is 0.1%. However, you mention that you bath your baby daily? This is too often imo for a baby with eczema.

My dr recommended not using anything in the bath (oilatum wasn't working), and bathing as little as possible in plain water.

I currently bath her every 3 weeks (yes, really!) and her eczema has disappeared. If I increase the baths to every two weeks, it comes back.

You can obviously top and tail as required, but even plain water is very drying to the skin when soaked.

YummyMam · 24/03/2008 18:08

We are under the care of the dermatology clinic at our hospital for DD's eczema (which mostly affects her face). The latest thinking is actually that you should bathe babies with eczema regularly - even twice a day if necessary as it cleans off all the bacteria which could make the skin worse. BUT don't use plain water - it is very drying. We use porridge oats wrapped in an old pair of tights. The stuff that comes out is very soothing (but you need to find what works best for your baby).

Also, they have given us a list of the possible stroid type creams that can be used and HC 1% is the lowest they would recommend. It did make me feel a lot better about using it when I saw it at the bottom of quite a long list.

As I said before you need to check everything out with your GP, but a word of warning - I blindly followed everything our GP told us (and have posted about it before), but when we finally got our referral to the hospital it was quite clear that the GP didn't have a clue!

JingleyJen · 24/03/2008 18:12

Don't fret about mild steroid creams if used effectivley they can help relieve your little ones symptoms.

We bathe DS2 (and Me) in oilatum as plain water drives our skin potty and we bathe every day as YummyMam said to ensure it is clean and clear of bacteria.

Make sure you get advice from your GP though.

scottishmummy · 24/03/2008 18:54

oh can you expalin to ne how to do the porridge oats in the bath please!what oats just regular porridge oats

another vote for extra virgin olive oil

YummyMam · 24/03/2008 19:39

Any porridge oats (Tesco value for us).

Just a spoonful in some tights. I buy packs of the cheapest tights possible and just cut off a few inches at a time. knot in one end - oats in, knot in the other end. Into the bath, squeeze it about (you'll be amazed at what comes out - it's lovely). Chuck in the bin at end of bath.

I think we picked this up from MN ages ago

scottishmummy · 24/03/2008 19:46

okay so any value tights and porridge for us then!

Bouncingturtle · 24/03/2008 19:55

Olive oil doesn't need to be extra virgin btw!
I think I might try the porridge oats.

angiebaby78 · 24/03/2008 19:57

wow i will try the oats for myself, always had dry skin. Thanks yummy

Katflowers · 24/03/2008 21:17

Goodness - you are all so helpful. Thanks. We see our GP on Thursday - in Jersey you have to wait to see the 'best' doctors - so will get a prescription then. Will definately raid the kitchen cupboards for the porridge though!
