Aptamil lactose free - 6m plus?

So I'm seeing that lactose free milk isn't usually out on repeat perscription, my baby has now been on Aptamil lactose free from the age of 5 week, she's now 6 months old! I've noticed the formula says from birth to 6 months - idk where to go from here.. I will call gp in the morning but should she only have been on lactose free milk for 6-8 weeks? I'm so confused. Tia x

Did the GP tell you to use it?

dementedpixie · 02/01/2024 22:22

The website says

Aptamil® Lactose Free First Infant milk is a nutritionally complete, lactose free breastmilk substitute. Suitable as sole source of nutrition from birth to 6 months and as part of a weaning diet from 6 to 12 months. Contains DHA, as required by the legislation for all infant formula.

Does the tin not give formula amounts for 6 months plus because it does online?

emsantana99 · 02/01/2024 22:27

Yes they did, but I've seen that after 6-8 weeks you're supposed to try and reintroduce their normal formula once the gut has settled! I was never told this so now my daughter has been on lactose free the whole time!

On the tin it just says suitable from birth then as part as of weaning from 6 months so I know she can still use it I'm just rly confused now as I never was told to wean her off it! Thanks for your response :)

This is just to confirm the intolerance. For intolerance or delayed allergies the diagnosis process is removed food see improvement reintroduce food seem symptoms reappear

My daughter has 20 food allergies including dairy. For most of her allergens we did the test after removing the foods but for us the difference when removing dairy and soya were just so pronounced we didn't do the reintroduction and our medical team have been happy with that. Once she turned 1 were given the go ahead to start the milk ladder and she failed on a single crumb our confidence in our observations were confirmed

Thanks for your response, could you also tell me the difference between a dairy allergy and lactose intolerance? I know it's not the actual cows milk protein as her milk still has cows milk in it, she just had an unsettled gut as a newborn but was put on lactose free at 5 weeks old. Also, with baby jars, can she eat the ones that don't say 'dairy free' as long as they have no lactose ( milk) in them? I know it's because of cross contamination but as it's an intolerance not an allergy I'm just a bit unaware. I guess the thing to do is wait until she's 1, do the milk ladder & go from there x

Lactose is the sugar in the milk whereas dairy allergy is to do with the proteins in the milk. If the products are milk free they won't contain Lactose or cows milk protein. You can get Lactose free yogurts/cheeses that still have the proteins in or you can use dairy free products

I think what just confused me is it says nearly everywhere that babies should be put on lactose free formula for 8 weeks and then try and gradually re introduce.. my dr never did she was just put on repeat prescription and has been on it ever since! I'm going to give my GO a ring tomorrow and see what they suggest

How did you get on with the GP @emsantana99 ? My LB is currently on sma LF milk, he has been on it for 4 weeks so far and got another 4 weeks to go before I can try him back on nannycare milk.

emsantana99 · 10/01/2024 15:40

Hey:) so my Daughter improved within a week of using aptamil LF - but she's on repeat prescription so she's been on it ever since. She was put on aptamil pepti 1 first as it was thought she had CMPA but that was ruled out.. I hope it works for you and I'm glad you was made aware about it only being for a period of time!!
