CMPA or something else

I gave DD (7.5 months) porridge with cows milk a few days ago. Around the same time (not immediately) an itchy rash of tiny bumps has come up across the back of her head. She has had no dairy since, is exclusively breastfed (I eat dairy and she has never showed any obvious issues, but the rash has not gone anywhere. I’d say it’s got no worse and no better. Is the milk still a possible culprit and if so how long before the rash improves? I’m kicking myself for giving it her so early, I didn’t realise it wasn’t advise until 1, though little bits in cooking are supposed to be ok but I don’t really think porridge is only a little bit.

Might be, might not be. If there are no other symptoms it's not sounding too alarming. Is it hives or a rash?

But stop beating yourself up about introducing it. You did the right thing. The earlier allergens are introduced the better. You most definitely aren't supposed to wait until 1. That is just to offer cows milk as a main drink (instead of formula or breastmilk). Its absolutely fine to offer it as a food.

Thank you for your reply. I thought so but we’re already struggling with a bit of a backwards turn with sleep and the itching/scratching is making this worse. From pictures I don’t think it’s hives. I thought it would go away after a few days without any more milk but it doesn’t seem to have got any better and I’m reading online it could take weeks to go away! Really? From one exposure? It’s just a bit of a nightmare wondering if it’s something else.

Bumping as it’s still no better. Can anyone who’s baby has had a milk related rash from one exposure say how long it took to clear?

It's possible it's eczema that has flared from the milk, or heat, or from something else. If so see the gp as you will likely need medication to help clear it.

But please please don't jump to conclusions that it's the milk. I've done many allergy reintroductions and it's so easy to assume something is being caused by a food but in my experience it most often is something else entirely.

thank you. The reaction wasn’t immediate so I’m wondering if there actually is any way to know even if we were able to get allergy testing done - doesn’t it only show immediate reaction?

Could be a bit of eczema from the milk.

My little one was diagnosed with a milk allergy at 6months old. He is quite sever with it. His symptoms are eczema flare up, colic symptoms, smelly diarrhoea, vomiting, blood in poo, and just very unsettled - lots of crying.

How long it takes to go away depends on how much milk he has had really, he has older siblings that like to share biscuits when I'm not looking 🙈

We are currently doing the milk ladder so he is having very small amounts. his eczema flares up and has a bad belly, however because its a small amount, these usually settle within 24hrs

Current advice is to give the major allergens as soon as possible and frequently.

It doesn’t sound like CMPA.

Immediate food allergies (ige) have symptoms in 0-2h and include rashes and anaphylaxis and typical allergy symptoms. Delayed allergies (nonIGE) have gastric symptoms and some times a rash with symptoms occurring 2-72h after the exposure. For the last two delayed allergic reactions my daughter has had she has had a rash on most of her torso which took 4-6 weeks to clear with a daily creams and trips to go for advice in the mean time.

For suspected allergies take the food out until all the symptoms have gone and try again. Cows milk is only not recommended before 1 as breastfeeding and formula are better.
When you give dairy next time give a small amount of the first day and then a little bit more building up to a full portion over 3-4 days
