We are going on holiday next week! I think eating out will mostly be ok, but we are going self catering, and want to be able to buy some bread and butter to make sandwiches for ds as a back up.
I need a dairy free and soya free spread and a soya free bread! I dont relish the idea of trying to translate the ingredients in a spanish shop, so can anoyone recommend any brands?

My only recommendation is to take the products with you. I have not yet being able to find any alternative spread. You will be able to get glutten free bread but I supose that at the cost of spending a good precious hours of your holiday (in finding the store and then where to park... or at least that's how it works for us!)

DS has plenty of allergies and the way we have managed during the holidays is to carry a pack of rice cakes, corn biscuits, glutten free pasta. A chocolate cake from the free from range cut in pieces and frozen so... we order from the menu and complement with these other things. The chocolate cake allows for stop over at cafes with DS (we then can order pastries without much guilt!).

And... just to keep the spirit of a holiday, remember that he won't get any permanent damage if he is not getting bread every day. actually, he may enjoy indulging himself with another carbohidrate: Patatas!!!

I thought that might be the case. I was hoping not to have to take our own food, but I think it will be necessary for peace of mind.
Do you put yours in your hold luggage? I am paranoid that if the luggage gets lost we won't have any food for him, so I want to get some dairy free spread, pasta and some jars (to use as pasta sauce if necessary) in my hand luggage. (As well as his milk and all of his creams!)
Is it allowed?

They had loads of soya yoghurt type things and soya milk when we were out there.

It is soja in spanish IIRC.

I couldn't see a dairy free spread, but i didn't look particularly hard.

It was easy to find dairy free baby food jars though and fruit puree type things.

ratbunny · 15/03/2008 07:44

thanks trixy. he is also allergic / intolerant to soya though, which is what makes it difficult.
looks like I will be making a stash of dairy etc free stuff to take with us...

Oh god, don't know what I'd so if DS was/develops an allergy to soya! That must be a nightmare for you!

It might be an idea to take some spread with you then.

Hope you have a nice time! Wish i was off on holiday .

I normally keep the sacred box of biscuits, in my bag (along with Epipens, Piriton, etc) along with anything that he would need for a day. I also used to put a few cartons of rice milk (200ml) in the hand luggage which was a small suitcase with wheels. But the new security measures are making things more difficult so we have to carry a letter from the doctor to show why we need to carry so many liquids although as things get more and more difficult, I am checking in the cartons and just allow him to have one before we pass through security.

I also carry a card with instructions of what DS can not eat, that I show to the waitress when asking for suggestions. In spanish it and for your child allergies it would say:

"Mi hijo es alergico a los lacteos y a la soja, podria recomendarme un platillo que no los contenga? Gracias."

Don't forget though that soya can be hidden under so many names that it would be difficult for the lay person to be sure whether something contains it or not.

MeMySonAndI · 16/03/2008 00:07

BTW, you need to put the spread in the hold luggage, otherwise they may remove it from you when you pass through security.

ratbunny · 16/03/2008 12:45

thanks memyson&i
I am a bit paranoid about putting important things in the hold luggage, in case it gets lost!
but I think I may put a small amount of bread, butter etc in my hand luggage, and more in the hold luggage, so I can cope with the small amount if necessary.
I would like to take his entire weeks milk poweder in my hand lugagge though, as it cant be replaced with anything else. Will that be ok do you think?

so, I am planning on taking in my hand luggage: creams / ointments (all less than 100ml each), antibiotics (he wont have finished the course yet), piriton (less than 100 ml), a tupperware tub of marge, half a loaf of bread (!), his milk powder. Do you think they will allow all that?

OP posts:
trixymalixy · 16/03/2008 16:46

I think that should all be fine as long as the tub of marge is less than 100ml as well. You can take more than 100ml piriton as it is a prescription medicine.

I think the baby formula should be fine too, but I would check with the airline just in case .

MeMySonAndI · 16/03/2008 17:40

Piriton is fine as long as you put it in a separate plastic bag. For some reason the people in security always get uneasy at finding it in DS's medical kit (along the prescribed not-over-the-counter medicines)

Creams and ointments won't be accepted in hand luggage unless the containers are less than 100ml.

In all honesty, get what you need for the first day in the hand luggage. If things get lost ask for a "Tienda de productos ecologicos" (Health food shop) for food things. And for the creams, any pharmacy must stock the more popular strong creams like Aveeno and Eucerin 10%.

Baby formula will be fine, as long as it is in poweder they don't see it as a security treat.

ratbunny · 16/03/2008 18:00

thanks again.
his piriton isn't prescription - I bought it, under the allergists advice. I also didnt consider that you could probably get hc creams etc from a pharmacy!
things are so different with hand luggage now - about 3 years ago, dh and I went to malaysia just with hand luggage - everything in a rucksack. I am sure you couldnt get away with doing that now!
