My son (6) has a dry, flaky scalp as part of a skin condition he has and we've been using a soak and float shampoo bar from lush. It hasn't cleared it but it has stopped the itching. You could also try rubbing olive oil into it and leaving it on for a few hours. It might help a bit.

hello thanks for feedback. whats in the soak and float bar? The itching is the main thing that i want to solve. i tried rubbing in epaderm into scalp for 4 hours and washed off this evening and will see if this stops him waking up in the night to scratch his scalp. Will also try olive oil. thanks!

DS has eczema which affects his scalp as well as the rest of his body. We don't use shampoo at all, just bathe him in water with Oilatum and sponge his scalp gently with the water. Where it's really red and itchy I apply hydrocortisone cream.

If the scratching keeps him awake at night then you can get special sleepsuits from here with built-in gloves, they aren't cheap but really helped when DS's eczema was at its worst.

barefoot botanicals do a range called S.O.S which is for people prone to eczema and psoriasis. I just asked them for some samples of the body lotion and they sent me some shampoo and conditioner as well.

might be worth a try. The cream was recommended to me by a friend and so far after a few applications DD's skin is looking better

Have you tried not using shampoo at all? You don't really need to at this age - rinsing with warm water should be enough to get the baked beans out of his hair, and it might be that any shampoo will make him itch.

(you're sure it's not head lice, aren't you)_

DS1 (nearly 11) has a dry, flaky in patches, itchy scalp.

I bought Infaderm conditioning shampoo, especially for eczema, from Boots.

It seems to be doing the trick.

thanks everyone. I have looked at scalp and can't see anything in hair/head lice. what would i be looking for? he is only 14 months. thank you

I really would get a nit comb, and very gently comb his hair. Wipe the comp on a piece of kichen paper and see if you find anything. Could be lice - varying sizes up to about half a centimetre long, white or brown specks (egg cases).

If he has any contact with other children he might have picked them up, and my ds itches like crazy in the night if he has even a couple.

foxy1 · 14/03/2008 14:54

right will get a nit comb and which solution would you buy? have just looked at hair again and seem white specs in hair but not sure if that is just scalp flakes. how can you tell the difference?

You don't need any solution - just put some conditioner on before you comb. If you find anything come back and we'll tell you what to do next!

Is his scalp just itchy or is it scaly or flaky too? There are a number of things you can try - some you may need to get through your GP. Firstly I'd agree in theory with 'seeker' and use as little as possible. Only shampoo hair once a week at the most unless the state of it is really shocking! Then use shampoo that is as natural as possible with as little chemical in as possible - this involves quite a lot of label reading but is worth it if you ind something that works. We are using Hair Juice on my 2 yr old DS1 at the mo and a Burt's Bees product on baby DS2.(both had or haveshocking cradle cap) My older daughter itches and is using Dove as it is Ph balanced. In the past we have used Oilatum shampoo (available at Boots) which woked well on itchy scalps. All of these are pricey(except the Dove) but as we only use a tiny bit once a week or so they last ages. If his scalp is scaly or flaky there is a shampoo called Dermax Therapeutic Shampoo which might help but which you might have to get through your doctor. Similarly a product called Eucerin might help, but you might need to see your doctor for it. Let us know what works for you. God luck!

Hello - combed his hair whilst dry just to see and there were little bits of fluff in hair but nothing else really . combed his hair in bath as well and could not really see anything on comb. As said before he has few white specs on hair but thought this could be flaky scalp? so small so hard to tell. how can you tell the difference????

Thanks misspollysdolly
