4 year old is congested and coughs at night

Hello,

My 4 year old has been congested with a mild morning cough for almost a year now. She had a tonsilectomy in April and that cleared things for a bit but she was congested again by May - we thought it might be pollen from spring flowers. We travelled to Cyprus for 5 weeks in September and her congestion and cough stopped; we are now back and it has started again! (after a couple of days).

I am wondering whether it is the carpet in her room that is causing the congestion or her mattress etc. Our carpets are 10 years old and our flat in Cyprus has no carpets. Anyone else with a similar experience? I am not sure how to tackle this issue and I am worried she might end up developing asthma.

Thanks in advance!

Possibly a humidity issue. If you have high humidity it will obviously be absorbed into all of the textiles like carpets, curtains etc. You can buy humidity readers on Amazon (a bit like thermostats) that would easily tell you if this could be a contributing factor. If it is, I'd recommend a dehumidifier.

Her room is south facing and I doubt is humid - there are no other signs of humidity (smell etc) as it's always sunny pretty much. I thought it might be dust mite allergy...

Hoover often and window open at night... Ds has asthma and needs a window open all year round.

Not sure about the blocked nose but the constant throat clearing and coughs was post-nasal drip in our house.
Nose drops cleared it after a few weeks, but now it’s starting again…

With DS it's Dust Mite allergy. So rip the carpet up and out some allergy friendly flooring down to see if that helps. Allergy uk have done good tips on Dust mite allergy if you think it may be that.
