Cow's milk allergy in one ID twin?

I've just started weaning and have noticed that over the past few days that one of my 6 mo ID DTs gets a red rash in her face immediately while eating porridge made with full-fat cow's milk. She also seems to be a bit wheezy. At first I thought it was happening afterwards, and that she might be allergic to the wet wipes that I wiped her face with - but today it definitely happened as she was eating. And funnily enough her sister LOVES the porridge but she really doesn't seem that keen, which is totally out of character as she wolfs everything else down.

So my question is, is it possible for ID twins to have different responses to food? Does anyone have any experience of this? And also, can you do a skin prick test to check a cow's milk allergy?

TIA

Hi do not know about the twin thing, but it does sound like it could be a milk prob. Have a look at the other milk thread that is being discussed. We were never offered a test, it was more trial and error.

There was an item on the news recently about a pair of identical twins, one of whom had developed childhood leukemia whilst the other hadn't -something to do with certain genes that they both had being switched on in one and off in the other. So I guess it would be possible for 1 of a pair of ID twins to have an allergy that the other doesn't, for similar reasons.

does sound like it might be a milk allergy.

Hi

I have id twin boys who both have allergies but not all the same! So yes it is possible. Our consultant has told us that allergies can be due to exposure.

Oliver is allergic to peanuts, eggs, dairy , soyaand wheat

Harry is allergic to eggs, dairy, wheat, soya and house dust mite.

Ours first showed at about 6 months when harry had bad eczema. This then turned to asthma at about 11 months and I had been pushing for allergy testing until last august when they were nearly 3. They wouldn't do skin prick tests but did blood tests. They are very reluctant to do them in very small children, I was told under 2.

I would speak to your gp and ask for allergy testing, Mention the wheezing too. You may have to be a bit pushy. Best not to just replace with soya as many children have soya allergies too.

Good luck!

Thanks - that's really interesting. Funnily enough, when they were born DT1 went straight to NICU then SCBU and was given glucose until she was ready to take my EBM. DT2 (with the allergy) was given some formula - against my will, grrr - and then started having EBM, I do wonder whether that had an affect? Probably not, but who knows.

I will speak to my GP and see if I can get some tests done. I did actually try them both on soya milk this morning and there eas no reaction so hopefully it looks like I can use this as an alternative in cooking.

Are there such things as non-dairy cheeses and yogurts that I can try too?

My two were also in scbu and both given formula until I could express. Neither could digest it and I am sure that was the start. We are just being allowed to give a little soya and are starting on soya yogurts. You can get them in tesco. there is also ice cream called swedish glace.

You called also try oat milk or rice milk, you can get them fortified with calcium, which mine have on cereals. They will only drink chocolate oat milk! I'm not sure about the cheeses as we have only been allowed soya for the past week.

The good thing is we have been told a lot of children do outgrow allergies

I have 8 month old ID twins and both have a severe peanut allergy. Went for skin prick tests today and 1 is allergic to almond also and the other egg.

They have both been exposed to exactly the same things so this wouldnt explain the difference.

The specialist nusre said it was not unusual for ID twins to have different allergies although likely that both will have allergies (if you know what i mean) and they dont know why.

please read other threads on why soy is not good for young babies. They should have pepti junior, nutramigen or something similar. Even fortified rice milk doesn't contain the nutrients they need. See your gp and a dietician if the gp is not helpful.
