DS can’t breathe after eating vege sausage at school

My DS6 has just informed me that he can’t breathe when he eats vege sausages at school. He doesn’t eat anything at home (that I’m aware of) that has this effect. Could this be a soya allergy? No history of allergies in the family so I’m completely new to this. What should I do now? GP? I don’t fancy giving him some vege sausages as an experiment to see what happens! Any advice/ideas welcome please.

Can’t breathe for how long? What do school say about it? Soya is in a lot of things so you’d likely notice an allergy to it at home.

Soy is a good guess. It's related to peanuts and peas (legumes).

Allergies can be worse on re-exposure. He should start a food diary and you should make a GP appointment. Also, buy some liquid antihistamine if you haven't got any and if it happens again he should have some.

Also have school confirmed what’s in the sausages?

Badbudgeter · 23/08/2023 00:06

I’d contact the school and ask for an ingredients list for the veggie sausages and have a look at the allergens. You might be able to narrow it down to something he doesn’t normally have.

He was quite vague about it and he won’t have spoken to anyone at school as he’s very shy. I think he just chooses a different option now when that is on the menu. I’ve googled things that contain soya and I’m not sure he would eat it at home, really. It may be absolutely nothing. Just wondered if anyone had experienced similar.

Then you should start by speaking to school then they can give you the ingredients list, and keep an eye on him. Especially as he is 6 and very vague, I think you are jumping ahead a few steps here. Speak to school and go from there.

I will contact school when term starts again. He’s going into Year 3 and won’t be having free KS1 lunches anymore anyway, so at least he won’t be at risk of eating anything again at school.

The allergies are probably on your LEAs school menu on their website.

The menus are on there, but not ingredients or allergens. Just a generic statement about not being able to guarantee allergen free etc.

Quorn sausages contain mycoprotein which seems to cause allergy problems in some people.I'd check it out to see which sausages they supply.

Ask school for the ingredients and ask GP for a referral to allergy clinic

FerryPink · 23/08/2023 00:49

You can be allergic to anything so it could be something obscure

In Vege sausages it could potentially be legumes or lentils as they are common allergens. But you will need the full list of ingredients for allergic clinic (when places list allergens they just list the top 14, but many people are allergic to things outside that list. )

Agree

My daughter has a number of food allergies and can't have veggie sausages primarily due to soya, egg and pea protein allergies. She only reacts to pea protein and not actually peas which she eats her own body weight in!
