Coming to grips with new allergies in middle age

After getting hives I had a blood test, suspecting peanuts might be the culprit, and discovered I was indeed having a reaction to peanuts, after 50 years of safely eating them. Cut them out, still had hives, cut a few more things out and the hives stopped.

Had additional blood tests and so far am showing abnormal IgE results for a slew of other foods [screenshot attached], most of which I've been eating without issues that I'm aware of. The numbers aren’t high. I have yet to talk to a specialist about this (am on a NHS waiting list). My GP's advice has been to avoid foods that have been flagged.

The only other definite reaction I’ve had, besides hives, is what I’d call discomfort in my throat (no trouble actually breathing, but indeed some constriction) after eating or even being around ripe bananas. It's interesting to me that that had the lowest abnormal reading, though I have read that the numbers don't indicate how severe a reaction might be.

I do seem to have trouble digesting food in general - have done for many years - though am not in great distress; am now of course wondering how much of that is due to allergies or intolerances.

I guess what I’m wondering is, if I’m not having a definite reaction to a food, such as hives or the throat thing, but show abnormal results, if I still need to avoid it. Question of course properly addressed to a doctor, but given this list, as I said, it’s going to be tough until I get to talk to one. May have to bite the bullet and go private I guess.

Has anybody else here presented with multiple food allergies at middle age? My history is that I had allergies as a kid (nothing food related) which seemed to go away.

Hi,

I've recently entered the world of food allergies too, at the age of 40, after going into anaphylactic shock one day at home at the end of last year, no prior warning. I'm under the allergy clinic at the hospital, and my allergies seem to be fruit related. I carry antihistamines and epipens at all times now.

A couple of things showed up on my tests that I've eaten fine all my life, and ate without trouble in between having the tests and getting the results. The doctor said to carry on if I'd never had a reaction, but just be aware of anything feeling odd afterwards, even if very minor.

Oh, and if you're getting discomfort with bananas, I think that can be linked to a latex allergy, and there's a number of other things within that family. So maybe don't blow up any balloons!

Me as well. Not only did hayfever hit me hard for the first time in my early forties, I’m now unable to eat apples, cherries, kiwi, pineapple, Brazil nuts, almonds or hazelnuts.

Fortunately my symptoms are mainly itchy mouth, slight wheezing and a rash so more annoying than anything else.

Only advice from my GP is to carry antihistamines with me and avoid any food triggers.

Thanks for the replies, and the heads up about latex.

My allergies and intolerances started in middle age. Among other things I was diagnosed with a dairy allergy which I had never suspected. I gave up dairy for a while, but then had a big reaction when I re introduced it. My tip is, don't do anything hasty!

I'm sixty and suddenly seem to be allergic or at best, intolerant to seed oils. This has manifest itself by slight soreness around mouth and eyes but spectacular soft tissue and joint pain throughout my body and especially in the sites of old injuries.

Same im 43 and a month ago went into anaphylactic shock. Now carry an epi pen, waiting for the results of my allergy tests this week. Never had an allergies until now, it's really strange

Since I turned 40 I’ve developed issues with bananas, mangoes, almonds, avocados and rosemary oil. I get really congested and mucousy in the throat, swell up and get awful stomach cramps.

I’m starting to react to wheat as well :( I take a daily antihistamine now.

I’ve never met anyone who’s had these sudden onset allergies so it’s comforting to know I’m not alone.

This is so interesting! Three weeks ago I started with what the pharmacist thought was hives, I went on holiday the next day and ended up on a drip as my whole body came out in a rash and my eyes, lips and throat swelled up. Cannot for the life of me pinpoint what it was, petrified of it happening again so carrying steroid tablets and antihistamines around with me at all times, had a referral but my appt is not until Nov 😕 I’m 45 and nothing like this has ever happened before
