DD been on Infasoy 3 mo-tried again with Aptimil and horrid but worried about soya now

DD (4mo) was prescribed Infasoy 3 months ago after treatment for reflux had no effect on her constant crying, etc. Within a few days of Infasoy she was my happy baby again-such a relief. My GP did ay when he prescribed it though he "wouldn't want any kid of his on it long as it contained high levels of synthetic female hormones". We tried her on Aptimil yesterday and this afternoon the screaming banshee returned! Awful nappies up her back and very distressed.
The thing is I did some research into soya based formulas and am now a bit worried about putting her back on it. On the one hand she enjoys Infasoy and is gaining weight well (18ib) but I worry about possible health implications. The Food Standards Agency says research needs to be done into the risks to infants on Soya milk!
Are there any alternatives similar to this but Dairy Free?
DD never had a definitive test done- there was such an instant improvement with the Soya it was presumed she had a milk allergy.
I'd really appreciate your thoughts/advice. Many thanks.

I can't help on the alternatives side I'm afraid, but wanted to say that there are risks with everything. I have a very happy, healthy 4 yr old who grew up on Soya for the same reasons as your dd with no problems.

Plenty of alternatives but most need prescption, as they are basically hydrolysed formula.

Nurtramigen 1 or 2 ( dependant on age)or peti- something (I can't fully remember) but any paed dietician should be able to help

DD1 has cows milk protein intolerance ( as does dh) and we were also concerned about the risks we weaned her from the breast to nutramigen because of the phyto estrogens, how ever it wasn't easy as it tastes disgusting but with persistance got there.

DD2 7 months however is on the soya stuff as she has CF it's more important that she takes a decent feed ( and I'm still largely breast feeding and only use it to make up breakfast)

imo Keep going with the soya and ask either hydrolysed forula or referal to a dietician

Can you not get a prescription for nutramigen, pepti junior or neocate if you're worried about the soya?

dorisofdevon · 21/02/2008 21:35

Forgot to add also advised to be extra vigilent with teeth cleaning ( once they appear obviously) as there are increased sugars in the soya formulas

NB this also makes the transfer to hydrolsed formula "challenging"

SMA lactose free is wonderful. both my dds take it

for a while i was mixing between soy formula and goats milk formula. but the LF is the best

ess · 21/02/2008 21:43

Thanks everyone, yes think I may ask GP for SMA Lactose Free or the Enfamil one. Her teeth are coming through now and the sugary content worries me.

ess, you perhaps need to have your DD allergy tested to see whether it is a dairy allergy or not as the lactose free formula will be no good if that's the case.

Think you're right. Because we went straight from normal formula to Soya and there was a vast improvement it's difficult to know what shes intolerant of. Wish we'd tried the lactose free first. Will my GP do this do you think or should I get it done myself?

the enfamil smells awful!

SMA LF smells like regular formula. (although regular SMA smells awful....)

perhpas an allergy test would be wise, you can ask your GP about all this?

dontwanttogetoutofbed · 21/02/2008 22:06

what i did was once my dd1 had 10 days of terrible diahhrea i switched her to soy. the diahrea stopped. then i switched back to regular milk and the same day she went back to tummy pains etc, so i stuck with the soy.

then my homeopathic doctor said the same about soy as your GP did and he recommended goats milk formula. i tried that for a while and it worked for about 6 weeks, and then she started getting gas.

so i tried the enfamil. but after i bought it and opened i couldn't bear the smell. so i went on a hunt and discovered the SMA LF. i just tried it to see what would happen. it was great and i stuck with it.

my dd2 started out on aptamil and at around 8 months she began to have diahrea.... i switched her to SMA LF as well.

dontwanttogetoutofbed · 21/02/2008 22:08

i didn't get any tests done. but i also have a slight lactose intolerance so i guess i just assumed thats what it was for my dds...

ess · 21/02/2008 22:17

Thanks so much. Good sound advice as always. I'm going to call my GP in morning and ask to be prescribed the SMA Lactose Free. Worth a go, then I'll try the dairy formula again in a while. Night night everyone.

Just to let you know my GP was a total arse when I told him of my concerns about the soya milk. his words- "I don't believe it". Nice eh? Talked to another doctor and she totally understood my concerns. She's prescribed her Pepti Junior. What is the difference between this and just Pepti?
