Should I wash a baby’s bridesmaid dress before wear?

My 5 month old will be wearing a bridesmaid dress (polyester mix) from Monsoon next month. It’s beautiful, but I’ve just thought, do I still need to wash this before wear as I have done with everything else she has, or could I get away with not washing it? I feel it might spoil it…

I usually wash things first, but no I wouldn’t in this case. Some people never wash anything first.

You should but probably won't be a big deal if you don't

Does your DD actually have allergies to fabrics? Confused. I've never washed anything before my DC wore it ... I wouldn't even consider it.

I’ve had a prem NICU baby and I’ve never washed anything before she’s worn it Confused

Never even would have thought about this.

I wouldn't

Orchidflower1 · 29/05/2023 06:26

i wouldn’t for fear if ruining the dress. Is there scope to wear a vest under it if you’re worried about skin irritation?

Ramsayst · 29/05/2023 09:30

Thanks so much for the replies. She doesn’t have any allergies. I normally wash everything first (first time mum and this is what I’ve been advised!) but I’m thinking it’s probably fine to not wash this one. It’s too beautiful to risk ruining it in the washing machine!

I never washed anything my DC had before they wore it. It was never an issue.

I did wash everything DD wore (also a NICU baby but i would have done it anyway) and i still do for her at nearly 2.

Not so much because of allergies to fabric (for those commenting above), but because new clothes can be coated in chemicals from the packaging / transporting.

But, i didnt with her christening gown as i didnt want to ruin it. She had a vest on underneath so contact with skin was minimal and she was only wearing it for a few hours. She was fine. So I reckon you'll be good to leave it, @Ramsayst!

I only liked DS to smell like 'us' so I washed everything first until he went to school Blush but in this case, I think you'll probably spoil the dress so best not. Agree with popping a wee romper vest underneath, which will both protect her skin and protect against the inevitable poonami.

I've never washed anything first. I line the new clothes feel.

Thank you! I would pop a vest underneath but it’s going to be July so if it’s a hot day, she’ll be roasting! I reckon as a one-off for a few hours, the dress will be ok. I wanted to ask on here just in case everybody answered “Absolutely not, I can’t believe you’d even consider not washing the dress beforehand!”😂
