Have an appointment at the doctors at 4.45. I am really worried that for no reason it would say that she does not have coeliacs and doc will tell me to put her back on Gluten. She is actually a different child over the last 3 weeks and I already can't quite remember how bad she was, she is now growing out of all her clothes.
I know they can't make me do anything but my mum is coming with me and if the doctor told me to put her back on gluten she would nag me to death.

Hope all goes well Cherry!

My ds2 (3yrs old). Got a negative test reult for dairy. But the specialist seeing him said not all allergies show up on the test, apparently theres some scientists somewhere trying to find out why some of the test come back neg when there is definately a problem.

Doc told me to continue dairy free as obviously much healthier child when following the dairy free diet.

YOU know your child better than anybody. If you believe gluten free is best than stick to it, not going to do dd any harm if she still getting a healthy diet.

cherryredretrochick · 19/02/2008 12:35

She is getting the healthiest diet she has had in her life as she wouldn't eat before, now eats everything in site and I am almost (and I say almost) getting bored of hearing mummy i'm hungry. She has turned into a bottomless pit, it makes me cry I am so happy. (Also realised it wasn't just my cooking), friends have told me before that it was my fault she wouldn't eat.

Cherry - some friends they sound!! Glad your lo is doing better....

coastalmum · 19/02/2008 12:40

In my totallly non profeesional opinion I'd say stick to gluten free even if test comes back negative.

My ds was SO ill before we went dairy free now he's the picture of health. He's happy, I'm happy and i'm doing nothing to change that.

Stick to your guns if you have to.

cherryredretrochick · 19/02/2008 12:49

Karen people just think that a supernanny technique can fix every problem. She was referred to as a fussy eater and compared to when another child had a fussy phase (ie wouldn't eat their brocolli), she used to eat 2 mouthfuls and say she felt sick.
Coastalmum, she will definatley nt be going back on Gluten on my watch it is the best thing we have ever done for her.
I don't really know why i am nervous, I was like it for 2 weeks waiting for all the other results and the sense of relief when doc said everything else was clear so we could take her of gluten and see was imense. The change in her is dramatic, everybody has noticed. It doesn't really matter what the results say, the best way to know id=s through experience isn't it?

OP posts:
Karen999 · 19/02/2008 12:56

Cherry - you mean that 'Supernanny' cant fix everything? Right, thats her book going in the bin then....

coastalmum · 19/02/2008 12:56

Experince is definately the key.
As I said you know your child better than anybody else, and thats all that matters.

Good luck for this afternoon cherry. I agree with the others though, if the test for coeliac comes back negative, that doesn't mean that she's not drastically intolerant to gluten and that a gluten-free diet isn't the best thing for her anyway. From what I've heard, there are sometimes false negatives with the coeliac blood test, and given the dramatic results you've seen in the past few weeks, perhaps your GP would agree to diagnosing her as coeliac anyway.

Oh and I was always made to feel like a totally neurotic mother - even by my ex-health visitor and paediatric nurse MIL, who just constantly told me 'oh some children can just live on air, she's not ill, blah blah blah'. Apparently she now feels extremely guilty for not knowing what it was - I don't blame her for not knowing about the coeliac, but I can't forgive her for not supporting me and her son (DP I mean) when we said there was something wrong and thereby making us make DD1 suffer for way longer than she should have done . Sorry, slipped into a little rant there - can you tell I'm still bitter .

Will be thinking of you.

Thanks guys, like you say TK you know your own instincts are right but other people can actual make you question.
I think it was probably easier (or my mum tells me it was) when there wasn't all the research and you just did what you felt was right. Althouigh I would hate to think how many children had undiagnosed problems and were just labelled as fail to thrive with allergies and naughty with autism and add type problems.
I am actually very lucky, I have had a lot of support from family, as well as friends and the GP. You huys on here have probably helped the most though because there is nothing better than hearing the experience of people who have been there to save me making a lot of mistakes (and I would have).
Anyway thanks, I will post when we get back from docs later.

Ok so the tests were negative, doctor said he was not suprised as tets are not the best way to dx and that he does not want dd to have a biopsy,
He said that he could see the changes in her were incredible and she was a different child to the one he saw 3 weeks ago. She is to stay GF and in a few months when she is totally better we could try introducing things to see what she reacts to (ie things with more additives etc)and keep diaries etc, he is willing to do prescriptions without any further investigation as whether she is coeliacs or gluten intolerant it is clearly in her best intersts to be on gf diet.

bet you could have kissed him! Nice to her of a sensible gp.

wangle99 · 19/02/2008 19:47

I had this with DS, I couldn't believe the hungry stay I couldn't fill him up!!! He still is like that to a certain degree.

His is just wheat though not gluten (although paediatrician was convinced was coeliac!)

wangle99 · 19/02/2008 19:48

hungry stage even

coastalmum · 19/02/2008 20:45

Glad doc appointment went well.

Fantastic that doc could see how well your dd is doing.

Was your mum supportive of the doctors recommendation to stay gluten free?

tkband3 · 19/02/2008 21:59

Good news Cherry - glad you have such a sensible GP. Hope your mum was supportive too.

cherryredretrochick · 20/02/2008 08:27

Mum was fab, she was telling doc how much better dd is, he said he didn't actually need telling, he could tell in the 5 mins we were there. Then discussed family history of food problems and IBS etc with mum.
I will never see another doctor again unless I have to, the man has completly changed my opinion of GP's.
I am just so happy with everything right now, I can't believe I waited this long and how quick we have got evrything sorted out. Now just to try and sort dd2 out but thats a whole other challenge (any ideas welcome).

flamingtoaster · 20/02/2008 08:43

That is fantastic news cherryredretrochick. Glad your DD is so much better and that your GP was wise enough to prescribe.

nightcat · 20/02/2008 18:57

Yep, hang on to that doc!!
If the damage has not progressed to autoimmune (grr gold standard!!), then your dd might well get well enough and repair gut damage enough to not be affected by cross-contamination in the long run.
Glad it worked out well for you!
