Looking for hayfever advice

My Ds aged 8 is recently suffering with very itchy and irritated eyes. I've tried both tablet and liquid form of pirition/piriteze but doesn't seem to help. Not sure if it will take a while to work.
Wondering if anyone has used any eye sprays or cooling masks that you can recommend or any other advice please. He's not suffered like this in previous years.
Thanks all

Vaseline around the nostrils helps, hayfever wipes from Amazon & a nasal spray help my DD although 13yo so worth checking age range for spray. If the antihistamine isn't helping, worth trying a different type - there are a few different brands with different ingredients

Thank you I'll deffo look at that

I don’t know what age it can be taken from but fexofenadine is really good. Plus nasal sprays and eye drops. Ask in your chemist, though at that age you may need to see a GP. The recommended eye drops for my son were over £5 in Boots but less than £1 in Home Bargains

Get them to shower and wash their hair as soon as they come home and don’t dry any of their clothes, towels and bedding outdoors.

Try different anti histamines..my DC use loratadine (over the counter) it is better to start it before the season negons future years!
Keep windows shut.
Shower and wash hair as soon as in from outside.
Change bedding and towels frequently and clothing everyday.
Dry everything indoors.
Otherwise it's like wearing a pollen suit....

In terms of hay fever options make sure you have tried both Loratadine and Cetirizine and if neither is adequate the GP is likely to be able to prescribe Fexofenadine (I have had it since around the age of 8).

In midsummer I add in beconase nasal spray (savers is the cheapest place to get that round here) but that has a cumulative effect so you do have to keep on top of using it unfortunately.

I've never found any great eye drops, but am a big fan of big sunglasses.

I'd also add the basics of rinsing hair every time you shower (to wash the pollen off) and showering before bed rather than in the morning, if he doesn't already.

Poor love. I just wanted to say something for next year. Try to start the treatment early. If she's reacting now, I'd start maybe on the 1st March next year. Much easier to keep it under control if she doesn't already have full blown symptoms Wink

Sewingdufus · 14/05/2023 18:13

Fexofenadine is thought to be the best antihistamine. Dymista nasal spray also has antihistamine in it. You also need a good eye drop. Start treatment before symptoms come on. The effectiveness of most of these treatments is cumulative so make sure to take it regularly. Cool eye packs can help.

Keep inside at dawn and dusk. Keep windows shut. Dry washing inside. Wear glasses when you have to go outside. Wash hair and keep it away from your eyes. Wearing clean clothes and changing bedding frequently can help.

If symptoms are severe you could ask to be referred for desensitisation therapy. It’s several courses of pollen pills over 3 years and for me it changed my reaction from severe to liveable with.

Fab thank you very much all. I'm doing most of the advice above with clothing and showers every evening.
Will be trying the nasal spray and grabbing some Wipes, maybe he will be able to use them in school if he's bad.
Thank you again and will be putting in the calendar for March next year!

Optrex hay fever eye drops

gymwars · 14/05/2023 20:11

I tried every pill on the market and nothing was touching it. A few years ago Benadryl brought out acrivastine (I'd gone to the pharmacy and asked to look at the active ingredients in every product to rule out what I'd tried).

I took a pill there in the shop, and by the time I'd got home my nose had dried up.

Fexofenadine is the only one that works for me and doesn't make me drowsy. I suffer all year round thanks to numerous allergies and have to take it daily. I also use the hayfever eye drops when it's particularly bad. Hope your DD gets some relief soon, it's horrible x

I used to buy over the counter Piritese for children for my DS (who's a teenager now) but last year it wasn't helping him at all so he now has fexofenadine prescribed from the GP. He also has Beconase nasal spray (this is available over the counter for adults but has to be prescribed for children) and on the advice of a friend with bad hay fever I also bought Haymax ointment and Sterimar nasal spray. The Haymax wasn't cheap for a very small pot but it seems to help him. He says the Sterimar spray helps a lot (it's taken me years to persuade him to try any sort of nose spray, and he still won't try eye drops)

MrsK89 · 16/05/2023 18:29

Thanks all, I bought the eyedrops from the chemist and he's been using hayfever Wipes during school, after breaks. So far so good and redness has gone down a lot! Thank you all again
