Question for someone who knows about peanut allergies

I'm cutting things out of old cereal packets for a craft activity at my P&T group.

Don't know that any of the children have allergies, but don't know that they don't either.

Should I avoid using the crunchie-nut cornflake packet?

Am I being over-cautious? I don't know anything about allergies really.

Hey BS

I would avoid it just to be on the safe side.

I have quite a bad nut allergy. I have come out in a rash on my arm after somebody touched me when they had been eating peanuts.

I'm with WezzleWoo. My niece has it and is so sensitive an anaphylactic attack could be triggered by peanut less than on the point of a pin. She has always known to avoid certain lolly wrappers etc. and this would def be an issue for her. Better safe than sorry, I say.

On a related note, (as people who know will likely be reading this thread) does anyone think I should avoid giving my ds peanut butter in the mornings before he goes to nursery...nursery have never said that they have any children with nut allergies there but I wouldn't want to cause a problem...would they write to parents if there were a child with a severe allergy attending?

BroccoliSpears · 17/02/2008 20:40

I wonder about things like that angels.

think it depends on the nursery - certainly that's what my dsis has found in Oz. why not phone them and ask?

cluelessnchaos · 17/02/2008 21:17

dd1 has nut allergy, and local authority nursery will have to go through risk assesment procedures if there is a child with a nut allergy.

I've got a peanut allergy also & if, for example, if I'm in a room where at least one person eats peanuts, I'm doomed. This has happened twice on a plane & I was given an oxygen mask for the duration of the flight. Not fun. So in answer to your question BP, definitely avoid the crunchie-nut packet if there's even a remote chance that some child in your group may have a peanut allergy. Mine was discovered when I was 2.

Advice appreciated. Aithengyoo.

Have cut everything out of other cereal packets and have consigned the crunchie-nut to the recycling box.

And I have welty bruises on my thumb and finger in testament to all the cardboard cutting I've done this evening. Ouch.
