Help gassy 1 year old at night

Hello I'm desperate for some help. Since birth my 13 month old has been a gassy baby and most nights wakes up screaming in pain at night which I believe is gas pains. His belly is bloated a lot however he's not constipated. I've always been told he has a milk allergy as when he was younger he did projectile vomit and was constipated a lot. The formula he was given for milk allergies did help with constipation but not the vomiting which I believe was due to his reflux not an intolerance. Doesn't seem to matter what he eats either. I'm just at a loss. He even had a yogurt a couple of weeks ago and he had no tummy pain at all so surely if he had an intolerance he would of showed signs? Can reflux cause stomach ache? Any remedies that help?

Sorry that you haven't had any replies @Una22. Does he have any of these symptoms? I think I might be worth speaking to Allergy UK's Helpline.

Another thing that could be causing gas is Tongue Tie. Does he have any of these symptoms?

Have you spoken to your gp?
I'd properly keep a food diary to see if there us any correlation and potentially consider eliminating certain foods temporarily (but I'd want to speak to GP first before doing so to check there wasn't anything else going on).
If he has a milk allergy, is he doing the milk ladder? Yoghurt is very high up if he hasn't, a reaction can take up to 72hrs if they're non-ige so it might not be that same night you'd notice a difference.

Thank you for your help. He is on the milk ladder but only on stage 2. Mother in law gave him the yogurt to be honest but he was fine for about a week after. I'm just at a loss as even when he hasn't has anything with milk for weeks he's still not great to be honest. Only seems at night too. I'm thinking I've been told to give him soy or oatmilk instead of whole milk. Could it be that?

Not sure who advised Soy for a baby with suspected CMPA? The proteins are very similar so around half the people with CMPA also react to Soya.

Hi it was the dietician who told me to try soya milk but he seemed to suffer with tummy ache still so i switched to oatmilk. He seems better on the oat milk not sure if this too is similar to whole milk

I became dairy free for my breastfed baby and oat milk made me really gassy. Not sure if some brands are worse than others but I switched to soya which helped.

@Una22 hi did this get better for you? My lo is very similar at the moment

Cosmo676 · 20/04/2025 23:25

@LSMZ @Una22 same here. Any joy?
we have cut out diary for weeks which definitely helped with pooing but my LO has such bad tummy ache and bloating at night. Nothing seems to help and I’m at a loss too

LSMZ · 27/04/2025 22:18

no we still have issues I’m afraid. I think when they do have a dairy allergy it can just take ages for their tummies to settle after it’s removed. It’s so horrible to be struggling with this. Take care of yourself and get as much help as you can to survive the exhaustion!

Cosmo676 · 28/04/2025 10:33

@LSMZ I'm so sorry to hear this, it’s so tough isn’t it, I just want to make it better for him. Thank you for replying though, i don’t know anyone else going through this so it really helps to know I’m not alone. Hope things start to improve for you too
