Toddler poo consistency

Our toddler has never done a properly solid poo. She usually poos a few times a day and they are often soft - think hummus sort of consistency. Sometimes they are looser and have bits in. We weren't concerned as she has always been like this and seems totally fine otherwise. However nursery have flagged it to us repeatedly and I'm starting to get a bit worried. We took her to the GP who diagnosed toddler's diarrhoea and we also tried cutting out milk for a few weeks but that actually seemed to make things worse. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Does this sound like an allergy or could it be normal?

It sounds exactly like my toddler. She also had never done a solid poo and I also never realised it was abnormal until the nursery raised concerns. The GP said to me “If it was allergies or anything else, we’d see other signs. Lethargy or not quite growing properly or rashes or something. But the runny poo for this length on its own - no concerns.” She did warn me that toilet training might take a while as you are trying to train someone who has the runs. She was right - it was a bloody nightmare. We tried at 3 and failed - after a fortnight of washing three or four pairs of dirty knickers a day I gave up.
We tried again at just turned 4 and the third time at 4.5 - just before she started school. And managed- finally. I also spoke to school who don’t normally accept kids who aren’t toilet trained. They said it was a medical condition and like any other, they would manage. I sent in spare clothes every day. She only had a couple of accidents at school and the agreement was if it was particularly nasty I’d go in and sort her out!
Don’t worry. They do
grow out of it. It just takes a really, really long time! (My toddler is 13 now. It’s all, thankfully, a distant memory!)

Thanks @babybythesea - this is sort of reassuring but also a bit scary that we have a few years of this to come! We've been putting off potty training til things improve but I think we may give it a go soon. I thought the same that there would surely be other signs if it was an allergy, and the doctors didn't seem to think it was. I just wish there was something I could do to help resolve it. When did your child grow out of it?

Around 6. She learnt to cope at school but often couldn’t clean herself properly so dirty underwear was a thing until really late on. We had to be absolutely meticulous about hand washing. If you do toilet train, lots of spare clothes including underwear, and lots of nappy bags for dirties. And loads of wipes. And if it fails, be prepared to admit defeat. Dd was dry really fast but dealing with constant dirty stuff rather than just wet is soul destroying and it all became really tense. It wasn’t her fault - virtually as soon as she knew she needed to go, she’d been!
