Nutramigen Puramino

Hi all, my little one was on nutramigen lgg 1 which I know you prepare at room temperature and do not heat due to the proteins in it. She is being moved onto Puramino tomorrow because the lgg 1 isn't quite right. I've been advised to gradually introduce it i.e 5 scoops of lgg and then 1 scoop of Puramino but my question is is Puramino ok to go in room temperature water as the instructions state water that's cooled for 30 mins in the kettle (or is that room temperature)?

I haven't slept so I can't work out what's what and I don't want to do anything wrong.

Tia x

Don't know on that one sorry @Topaz0711

Hopefully someone will be along soon Flowers

BridieConvert · 08/02/2023 21:10

Boiling water cooled for 30 mins should still be about 70 degrees so wouldn't be room temperature.
You could try a straight swap - weaning onto it is for taste so if they accept it right away it's so much easier than mixing!
If you want to mix I think you'd need to make them up separately then mix together which can be a pain!

Topaz0711 · 09/02/2023 00:13

@BridieConvert How do I manage boiling water cooled for 30 mins when I go out and she is due a feed? I think I will try straight on just wanted to ensure I knew how to mix if needed she isn't too fussy though so should be ok.

Could you make up a small amount of each feed following the specific instructions for each one and then combine them?

Topaz0711 · 09/02/2023 01:26

@pampermouse I guess I can it's just going to be a bit of a faff if I'm out of the house for an extended period of time. As I asked above I'm unsure of how to make a bottle with boiled water left for 30 mins when I'm out and about. If only I was able to breastfeed I feel that would have been easier at this point.

4 years ago instructions were to boil water, cool, then refigerate. We then microwaved until blood temp as we established thats how hot it was after recommended cooling time and made it up.
Carry a stainless steel flask when you're out of cooled water, but leave it longer to cool as it obviously retains heat for a long time and get it to similar temperature as the water you used to make milk with that when homr.
If it says instruction for temp in caN ate different now make a bottle as instructed and see what the total level comes up to eg an 8oz will be more than oz ad it 8oz water plus powder. Check that level.ad about an oz of boiled, sl8ghly cooled water, all your powder scoops and top to the full level you have determined with sterile bpiled water from a bottle in the fridge ie cooling g it tight down.i did this most times too. Sorry for typos and ramblings, currently drugged!
Agree with the phasing in method though!

I had to use similar type of formula and couldn’t mix it up in advance apparently
So I bought a new thermal mug decent quality and took that out filled with boiling water from kettle although obviously it cooled over time. I used a life venture mug. And then I filled a cheap baby bottle with a cap so it didn’t leak with water that had cooled a bit from the kettle and this water cooled down quickly. I could then get room temp water by mixing the two lots of water in the bottle I was going to mix the formula in and then add the formula.
I used to fill a few bottles with the boiled cooled water and store in the fridge.
It is a faff and I ended up dropping the formula feeds and just bf on a restricted diet because I couldn’t be bothered.

pampermouse · 09/02/2023 07:31

Ah I see what you mean about out and about! We take out a flask of cooled boiled water and a flask of boiling water and combine them to make it the right temp. Would that work for you? These prescription formulas are such a faff compared to the normal ones, aren’t they?!

Topaz0711 · 09/02/2023 23:15

@GlamGiraffe @Orangesare @pampermouse thank you all of of you. I've not been able to get the formula today as the pharmacy didn't get their delivery so another day of unhappy baby today but hopefully tomorrow. I've read up on it a bit more and I can prepare all bottles in the morning and then put in the fridge for up to 24 hours. My question now is it doesn't say anywhere if I can then warm to drinking temp or if it has to then stay at fridge temp. I tried calling the nutramigen contact centre and the guy who answered hadn't even heard of the milk let alone know the answer so that was really helpful. The Puramino must be really rare because I'm not finding much online of conversations about it. Unless I'm just rubbish as searching information up.

I had to switch my DS from LGG to Puramino. I didn’t mix them though, just swapped straight from one to the other. If you combine them for a while, it’ll take even longer for the milk proteins to leave the baby’s system.

Of course you can warm them to drinking temperature after they’ve been made and stored in the fridge, as you would with any other formula. Lots of babies don’t like cold formula, and for some cold formula can make the reflux worse.

GlamGiraffe · 09/02/2023 23:22

We're pretty sure we microwaved it for a few seconds then vigorously shook to ensure no hot spots.(checked with dh) he also remembers keeping chilled water ( boiled cooled in sterilised sealed bottles) in fridge and adding powder as we needed them before warming but check if that's right on the tin. We definitely didn't give dd cold milk though, she's too fussy for that!!

Topaz0711 · 09/02/2023 23:24

@PippinStar I've never kept formula in the fridge before I have either made on demand or had formula that was made up with room temp boiled water. But with 2 other kids and busy times I need to be able to be out and about and give her a bottle without needed to be near my own kettle. At least if I take a bottle out of the fridge I can go into a coffee shop and ask for a jug of hot water for 5 mins to warm it up. That's fab thanks.

Did you see a different in baby switching from normal formula to nutramigen and then more difference going to Puramino?

Topaz0711 · 09/02/2023 23:36

@GlamGiraffe don't think I can add the powder into cooled water as it needs to go onto water hot. Think I'm going to do the microwave thing at home for ease and quickness tbh. Thanks for your help X

Oh, I’ve also made up the Puramino with room temperature water once the baby got a little older (maybe a few months old). But for convenience I preferred to just make them in the morning for the full day.

Both my kids had reflux and CMPA. My DS initially improved on the LGG but then regressed. He improved again on the Puramino and maintained that improvement. It was a game changer really (plus medication for the reflux). He was on it until he was 2, and he’s still dairy intolerant at 4.

My DD went straight onto Puramino from a couple of days old and she did really well on it too.

Hope your little one improves 😊

Topaz0711 · 10/02/2023 19:42

@PippinStar well first bottle has been given. Went straight in with 6oz and she drank the lot didn't spit it out and seemed pretty happy. Hopefully the next ones continue to be the same and she gets more comfortable as the days go on. She just needs to do a proper poo rather than these little watery ones we've been having for days which cause her so much pain.

Now I'm making bottles up, cooling and putting in the fridge for the day night and day ahead.

Thanks again X

Fantastic news, hope she continues to do well on it x

Hi all

My baby is 10 weeks old, just started the nutramigen puramino 2 days ago after being on the first nutramigen for suspected CMPA.

He takes a couple of gulps and then seems as though he's in pain and refuses the rest while crying😫
Does anyone have experience with this ?
Do you think it's possible to cause pain?

Both of mine (refluxers) were like this on it if I didn’t thicken it. It’s a very thin formula, so they reflux it more easily. That’s why a lot of people have to thicken it first with Carobel.

Hello, I’m aware this thread is from a while ago but I’m just wondering how you got on and if you mastered going out and about? We are due to go away for a few days and just started on the nutramigen puramino and I’m probably overthinking it now!
