New nut allergy in 50's?

Flymetothetoon · 29/01/2023 18:54

Has anyone any experience of developing a nut allergy in later life? I suspect I may have but given it's nigh on impossible to get a GP appt just wondering if anybody has experienced this?

I went to a flower festival that I go to every year and the last time I went, in 2022, I had the most horrendous allergic reaction and had to be hospitalised and I'm 55 so I'd say yes, you can definately get an allergy at any time.

romdowa · 29/01/2023 19:01

My mother developed several allergies in her 50s.

crochetcrazy1978 · 29/01/2023 19:01

Not nuts but I suddenly developed allergy symptoms after eating. Wheezy, gritty itchy eyes, sneezing etc. I paid for food and environment allergy testing (IGE) and turns out I'm now allergic to wheat, cows milk, soy, orange, and crab! Cut these out and no more symptoms. I'm mid 40's and symptoms have gradually developed over the last few years

Beamur · 29/01/2023 19:08

Yes. Repeated exposure to allergens can trigger late onset. My nut issues didn't emerge until my 40's

Makinglists · 29/01/2023 19:09

My mother also developed multiple allergies in her 50s. She had always had hay-fever and sensitive skin but suddenly all sorts of things that she had previously been able to eat gave her reactions. A couple of times she was hospitalised. If I remember rightly nuts became a trigger (when I was little she happily ate nuts). As she got older the allergies didn't go but became less severe. I wonder whether menopause was a trigger?

YukoandHiro · 29/01/2023 19:11

Any hormonal chance can cause allergies to shift or develop. It will be the menopause that's caused it.
Sorry. It sucks. I have multiple allergies and I have two kids who carry epi pens too.

YukoandHiro · 29/01/2023 19:11

*hormonal change

Duckduckgooseagain · 29/01/2023 19:15

I agree with PP the menopause and hormone changed cause allergies to flare up. They tend to be to stay if your an adult

AdventFridgeOfShame · 29/01/2023 19:15

I went from what appeared to be a slight lactose intolerance to a full blown CMP allergy in my 50's.

I think that menopause can pull a nasty stunt on or immune systems. Not very much research on it yet. Here's hoping someone like Dr Sarah Berry starts looking into the issue a lot deeper.

Flymetothetoon · 29/01/2023 19:53

Wow thank you all for your insightful replies. Menopause definitely seems to be a factor here because it's just the last couple of years I've noticed an issue. I've suffered badly with hay fever as a child and teen then eczema in my 20's into 30's.

Never an issue with actually eating food stuffs though until now Envy

Flymetothetoon · 29/01/2023 20:12

BTW that is supposed to be vomit face rather than envy. It's vomiting and puffy eyes which are my symptoms after eating nuts but the puffy eye thing lasts for several days afterwards.

I was just about to say hormones, and our histamine levels can rise.

Have a google around high histamine levels in women during menopause.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 29/01/2023 20:17

@Flymetothetoon do you also do the coughing and wheezing?

Flymetothetoon · 29/01/2023 20:26

@AdventFridgeOfShame yes constant dry cough but it's irritating rather than concerning me

OP posts:
AdventFridgeOfShame · 29/01/2023 20:37

Try not to do what I did.
Ignore , ignore , make up excuses , find out what anaphylaxis feels like. Discover the joys of taking high doses of prednisolone.

Book a bloody Doctors appointment, you are worth it.

Get some Piriton (chlorphenamine maleate) it is a first generation antihistamine, it works fast but can make you drowsy. Take it when you feck up and get contaminated by nuts

Get some Piriteze (cetirizine hydrochloride) take one a day, it should stop the cough.

Generic medicines are cheaper and are available from supermarkets and chemists.

See the doctor, you don't have to wait until you collapse. Do as I say, not as I did Grin

Flymetothetoon · 29/01/2023 21:12

Thank you 🙏 yes I do have and take Piriton because i do have an occasional flare up of eczema and hay fever. Will try and get a GP appt but currently I think it would be easier to get a face 2 face with the Pope!

AdventFridgeOfShame · 29/01/2023 21:19

Just say that you are concerned that your allergic reactions are heading uncomfortably rapidly towards anaphylaxis. Because they are,

Signs of anaphylaxis include:
itchy skin or a raised, red skin rash
swollen eyes, lips, hands and feet
feeling lightheaded or faint
swelling of the mouth, throat or tongue, which can cause breathing and swallowing difficulties
wheezing
abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting
collapse and unconsciousness it is not necessary to get to this point before seeking help

Flymetothetoon · 29/01/2023 22:14

Fuckety fucksticks! I've been hoping it would go away and resolve itself - getting older is shit indeed!

OP posts:
Beamur · 29/01/2023 22:16

Unwise to ignore it.
I had a blood test after a really bad attack - and out of the blue - of hives.
Now carry a precautionary EpiPen..

Jewelanemone · 29/01/2023 22:23

I developed Oral Allergy Syndrome in my thirties. It's connected to hay fever - I'm allergic to birch pollen and the protein in some fruit, veg and nuts resembles the protein in birch pollen. My body can't tell the difference and reacts with tongue/throat swelling and tingling. I'm supposed to carry an EpiPen but I just avoid the things that trigger it. Incidentally, if the trigger foods are cooked they don't affect me, as cooking breaks down the protein.

SnoozyVanWinkle · 29/01/2023 22:31

Kate Silverton the newsreader developed anaphylaxis as an adult.

Flymetothetoon · 29/01/2023 22:33

So at the moment my symptoms are vomiting and swollen puffy eyes after eating nuts ~ no breathing difficulties ~ this has been happening for the last two years or thereabouts.

OP posts:
AdventFridgeOfShame · 29/01/2023 22:41

And the cough. How mucussy is the vomit?

The problem is you don't know how puffy you are on the inside until too late.

AuntieEntity · 29/01/2023 22:50

This is very interesting. I'm recent weeks (since Christmas) I seem to be having a reaction to marzipan. Keep getting swollen eyes and raised itchy areas on my face. I'm 42 so I wonder if it's been triggered by perimenopause?

AuntieEntity · 29/01/2023 22:50
