Adult GERD/Reflux

Hoping someone can help.

I have chronic GERD/Reflux and am having a few more tests later this month. I'm so sick of feeling sick but I'm sure I don't help myself with my stress levels and love of chocolate.

Has anyone suffering actually found changing their diet really helpful? I really don't want to undergo these horrible tests so would like to help before hand.

My diet is generally good, I'm not overweight and don't really drink much. Doc has said if the GERD has been caused by campylobacter then it can be resolved with antibiotics. Has anyone had these to help either?

Many thanks

I was like you. I was in so much pain sometimes I thought I might need an ambulance especially at night, in bed.

Id previously been taking Ibuprofen for joint pain so GP prescribed tablets to reduce acid reflux caused by Ibuprofen. We put my reflux down to the Ibuprofen use.

Anyway, I stopped all medications & slightly improved. Coincidentally went to dentist about an abscess & he prescribed antibiotics. Within a week reflux & gut pain totally disappeared & has NEVER come back.

I actually think my guts’ ache & reflux was Helicobacter Pylori infection (which I actually knew about because I used to work in the medical arena) & the antibiotics cured it.

GP didn’t disagree when I told her afterwards so why the hell didn’t she test me for it instead of assuming it was the Ibuprofen?

You might have Helicobacter too? Ask if it’s a possibility. The test is simple.

@Warspite It sounds like you had H Pylori for sure, especially if antibiotics made it go away. I was half hoping this is what they found but I tested negative during the endoscopy.

I'm now waiting for the results of a 24 testing from a tube up the nose and down the throat, so hopefully that will throw up some answers.

I'm glad you got sorted. x

@Arniesleftleg The only thing I can suggest after everything that’s being tested, is look at your diet & make if less acidic.
Cut down on beige foods, biscuits, chocolate, crisps, and anything else we know is not really good for us. Cut alcohol for a while. Make your diet more alkaline for the blood stream. Google it. Eat more vegetables & salads and eat earlier in the evening.
Might make a difference? Worth a try?

I had to prop the head of the bed up so I wasn't flat and do the GERD diet for a month to sort mine out. It was hard but it gave time to heal. Every now and then now I'll have to do the diet and am used to sleeping on a slant but I don't need meds anymore apart from very occasionally like the average person.

@Warspite Youre so right, I do hammer the beige during the day as I don't have lunch breaks so grab rubbish snacks to see me through. I do eat fresh home cooked foods and veg etc but the ratio with rubbish is not great. Ive only had two glasses of booze since December so that's going well. I definitely need to make changes. I'm hoping the consultant will give me a few pointers, although he's already told me to cut out caffeine, chocolate and meat! Trouble is, I have severe IBS too, so eating too much fruit and fibre gives me pain! 😳
