Intestinal gas

Hi my baby boy is 8 months old. He is diagnosed CMPA. I breast feed him & make all of his food so we have no dairy at all. This has stopped a lot of issues. Poor little man still wakes 6–8 times per night crying in pain because of intestinal gas. I can hear is bubbling through his little tummy. He is no longer fed through night & his last feed is 7:30pm. I can tell he is in pain because of his cry. I lift him out of his cot, a few minutes later he breaks wind then he’s off to sleep again for an hour or so, this is repeated all night. He genuinely wants to sleep & he looks so tired bless him. Anyone else had this experience.

Have you seen a Paediatric Dietitian @Babyboop? And have you been advised to cut out soya? I think it's around 50% of people with CMPA also react to soya.

I'd suggest experimenting cutting things out of your diet as well as his.
Soya, wheat, nuts, onions all might be good starting points.
And the rule of waiting 2 weeks to get it out of your system isn't necessarily true, that only really applies to cutting out dairy. Most other foods only hang around your body a few days at most, though might take a little longer to get out of baby's body.

Hi yes we have seen a dietitian. We don’t have any soya in our diets at all.

Ok so that sounds like he may be reacting to something else maybe? Can you get a referral to the allergy clinic?

How old was he when the CMPA was diagnosed? And how much food is he having?
My daughter was diagnosed late around 6 months and I do think this had an impact on her gut.
With weaning we went a bit slower and had a small number of "safe" (i.e. don't induce screaming in night from trapped wind) foods and she didn't really tolerate gluten until 10+ months and even then was slowly building up quantity.
I think at 8 months she was on 2 meals but even then it was 1 to 3 max ingredients per meal of foods she digested okay.
She also had no teeth until nearly 1 and I do think this made things harder on her tummy as not as chewed up.
We gave gripe water before bed until 15 months when had more teeth and this seemed to work well for night tummy troubles.
It takes a lot of experimentation and of course time for their tummies to get used to all the new foods!

Apparently they don’t do that i until they have had an exclusion diet

He was 5months when he was diagnosed after I demanded a poo test. Blood was found. He’s on 4 meals per day because he is so incredibly hungry. He’s gone from 2nd percentile to 9th percentile after dairy was removed from his diet. I’m going to get some gripe water today. He has teeth coming through now which won’t help but it it’s the wind bubbling through his intestines that wakes him. I’m struggling to get calcium based foods into him due to being dairy free so we tend to mix food

Apparently not until we have done an exclusion diet.

Can you give us an example of his and your average daily diet?

Babyboop · 09/12/2022 21:15

Today I had shredded what with oat milk, ham & vegan cheese sandwich on home made soda bread made with koko yogurt. Mince potatoes carrot & peas. A piece of home made vegan oatcake.

Caleb had boob x 5. Movicol (for constipation, his poos are now normal with this). Banana porridge with oatmilk, butternut squash & mince with potato.

You could try adding chopped dried figs to his cereal, they're quite high in calcium. Is the shredded wheat fortified?

Goofyhair · 09/12/2022 21:27

You’ve only cut dairy from your diet? Have you ever tried cutting anything else? There’s a lot of oats in both of your diets with the porridge and the oat milk and oat cake.

I know I’m going to change to almond milk for him. I’m waiting until next week to make sure he isn’t allergic when the GP’s are open just incase.
