Is this a reaction and should I avoid triggers

DD (17 months) gets red blotches around her mouth when she eats anyting acidic ie tomatoes, pinapple, kiwi and also fish. She has eczema which has improved remarkably over the last few months to the point where we hardly ever use HC cream anymore.

Does this sound like an allergic reaction or a sensitivity? Should we avoid the triggers? She loves fruit and tomato based foods so I'm lothed to stop her having them but I'm not sure how it irritates her. She doesn't seem undully bothered but it's hard to tell.

I would be a bit careful with kiwi just in case.

For the rest, I would take them out of the diet for a couple of weeks and re introduce them slowly in the future.

Allergy to tomatoes is very common, but outgrowing it it is too. My son can now tolerate tomatoes as long as they are well cooked, fresh ones... no way.

Thanks, perhaps I should have added that she doesn't seem to get any other 'side affects' as it were and her eczema doesn't noticiably worsen. It's just this redness around the mouth (which does disappear after a while)

She may be sensitive or allergic to them at the moment, which doesn't mean that would be the case for ever. I will take them out of the diet for some time and re introduce them in a few weeks.

Sometimes that's enough for them to be able to tolerate the things. however, if the food continues to casue redness arounfd the mouth, what is the point of continue giving the food if it is not agreeing with them?

Would you continue to eat something that makes you uncomfrotable?

As for the tomatoes, the more cooked they are the less irritant they are.

Good luck

I agree but as I said, i'm not sure they are irritating her, she doesn't scratch her face or anything nor is she obviously distressed after eating them. The reason I've resisted is because she likes the food and it's good for her.

I will exclude them for a couple of weeks though see if it makes a difference

Doesn't have to look distressed. But the skin becoming reddish means the body is trying to fight the food.

I have not heard of any tomato allergy becoming worse due to repeated exposure, however I have found out that many symptoms DS had were caused by foods that we were a bit "iffy" about, even when we had never imagined there was a link between them. Hence my suggestion, but as I said, it doesn't seem a serious problem.

My DS2 sometimes gets this with tomatoes, fruit etc (especially tomatoes). He is allergic to nuts but the doctor told us this kind of skin reaction isn't really the same thing. Apparently there are histamines in tomatoes especially which cause this kind of reaction when in contact with the skin. His (very practical) suggestion was to put Vaseline around his mouth before he has anything with tomatoes so they don't contact his skin. That seemed to work for us.

Thanks mollymawk, I'll try that too
