3 year old random hives on face

DD is 3 and up until now has had no known allergies.
For the past 3 evenings she's came out in hives all over her face, she's visibly uncomfortable and scratching, piriton does eventually get rid of them.
She hasn't had anything new and hasn't had the same things to eat over the three days so I'm at a loss as to what is causing it. There isn't anything that has changed in her environment either.
Does this sound like an allergic reaction to something or something else?
I am going to give the gp a call in the morning but just wondered if anyone had experienced similar.

It does sound like it could be an allergy.

Can I just ask if you're wiping her face with baby wipes after she's eaten?

No I don't use wipes on her face usually just a face cloth and warm water. It's just left me stumped, it's happening between 4 and 5 pm every night so far but I can't pinpoint it to anything in particular.

Ok so I was just asking about the wipes as I know someone who had similar, logged all food they'd eaten for ages couldn't see a link and then someone pointed out that she used the same wipes after every meal and it was those! Wink

Allergy U.K. have a helpline, it might be worth talking to them?

KangarooKenny · 17/11/2022 06:20

Does she eat her tea at this time ?
Have you got a smelly candle or similar in the house ?

BCxx · 17/11/2022 06:24

@PritiPatelsMaker my little boy has this and after reading your comment I think it could be the baby wipes! It’s stopped being bad the last few weeks but we do have a different brand of wipes!

PritiPatelsMaker · 17/11/2022 06:27

@BCxx you're not the only one don't worry

I've mentioned it a few times on MN now and several MNers have had the same thing. Wink

girlmama29 · 17/11/2022 09:44

Ah @PritiPatelsMaker that makes sense and you wouldn't really think of it if it's something you always do! I think I'll give them a call Thankyou!

It's always just before dinner time that it happens, usually I'm in the kitchen prepping dinner and she has some tv time at this time so she's sitting on the sofa quietly. I can see her the whole time so I know she's not touching anything she shouldn't be, then the hives just start to appear and she gets really itchy. No candles or air fresheners that I've been using, haven't changed soap powders or used anything new for cleaning. It's bizarre.

That is odd. Does she have a drink or snack in the afternoon?

My DC had this and we couldn't work it out - GP said it was excema (it very clearly wasn't) and I was at such a loss.

After months and months of it we were prescribed citirizene (a stronger piriton) and it worked.

Not sure if it's the same for your situation but we were told this sometimes happens if a child is run down or getting over an infection / illness - it wasn't an allergy.

Have a read up on Uticaria.

Good luck with it OP Flowers

@PritiPatelsMaker isn't it! She usually has some fruit in the afternoon so yesterday was a pear and the day before was blueberries and mango. Today nothing appeared, she was a bit itchy on her neck at bedtime tonight but there were no hives or redness.
I spoke to the gp this morning and he's asked me to start a food diary to see if anything could be triggering it, I can't think of a specific thing it could be but this might help I suppose.

@user1465146157 that is interesting, she did have a bad cold last week so I wonder if it could be linked to that instead of some kind of allergy. I'll have a read up on that Thankyou!

A food diary will definitely help. It took a long time but we finally realise that DH's allergy was Sulphates.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 18/11/2022 07:27

i’d second being run down. I had something similar a few years back over new year, hives every evening around 11 pm for a few days then it stopped. Over Christmas I’d had a very bad stomach bug so was very run down at the time. It’s never reoccurred.

girlmama29 · 18/11/2022 09:58

DD woke up in the early hours last night with croup so it's possible it's just that that's been brewing. I will definitely keep the food diary going just incase though. Thanks for all of your help!

Sounds like viral hives

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 18/11/2022 10:06

My son had this totally randomly. It appeared at nursery one day by the time I collected him it was almost gone. Back to nursery next day it appeared again.
Disappeared by night time. A week later he had chicken pox and we are certain the virus had brought the hives on (chicken pox can be in your body for three weeks or something before you see spots).
So just be on the lookout for spots appearing

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 18/11/2022 10:07

Sorry just saw she has croup. Poor thing but yes definitely comes on when they get ill

IamNannyPlum · 18/11/2022 10:28

My baby had exactly this and it turned out to be covid.

PritiPatelsMaker · 18/11/2022 19:44
