On off diarrhea in 3yo - lactose intolerance?

Sorry for TMI in a very poo-related post...

DS has had on/off diarrhea for a couple of months now (possibly coinciding with with starting a new preschool) and I'm wanting to hear from anyone who has had a similar experience?

Typically he has both solid and watery/explosive poos in the same day - sometimes having a small 'accident' I assume when he thinks he's just going to fart, but following through a little.

Initially I thought stomach bug but it is so intermittent and gone on so long it surely can't be. He has had no fever during this time, possibly occasional cramping but not recently.

Dr Google suggested constipation, or toddlers diarrhea or lactose intolerance but none seem exactly what we're experiencing.

Surely if he were constipated he would have more cramping and less frequent solid poos (TMI - these aren't small or hard, but also not big either)

Wouldn't lactose intolerance have been symptomatic before now?

Toddlers diarrhea suggests a low fat, high fruit juice diet which doesn't sound like his...

I have decided it's time to call the doctor tomorrow after weeks of indecision based on 'he seems fine, no wait he doesn't'... But just wondering if anyone has had any similar symptoms, or experienced any of the three above issues to help shed some light?

Thanks in advance!

Lactose intolerance can be temporary following a stomach upset.

I don't suppose it would hurt to go DF for a couple of weeks to see if things clear up?

Could his gut be recovering from a stomach bug still? Maybe try some probiotics?

Have a look at the eric website - Eric.org.uk it's a charity for bladder and bowel issues.
