Argh, what the hell is this on DD's head?

Just before christmas DS got a patch of what looked like cradle cap on his head, it turned out it wasnt, so I took him to the GP's, got dx of impetigo, took two lots of antibiotics (one the strength for a ten year old, he is 3) didnt work, his head just got worse, then pusy and eventually his hair fell out, he now has fucidin H that is slowly making the redness go down, they never properly diagnosed it though, the doctor after the antib's said it def wasnt impetigo and wasnt sure what it was.

Just washed DD's hair, she no has a patch of flaky skin, same place as DS, right on the crown of her head, I'm desperate for it not to go the same way as DS, he was in a lot of pain and now has a huge hairless patch on his head, something that will affect a 7 year old girl a lot worse than a 3yr old boy.

Does anyone have any experience of a similar case??

Why is it something they've both got at different times?

To add to this I have had two patches of psorias come up on my shoulders, is perhaps something in our house triggering it?

Could it be ringworm?

VictorianSqualor · 28/01/2008 18:34

Shit!
It looks very much like what I have on my arms.

Oh poor you all!

Its fairly easy to clear up iirc.

VictorianSqualor · 28/01/2008 18:38

Is it dangerous in pregnancy?
I'm 30 weeks.

Not sure VS but start with the separate towels now, and fucidin/daktarin also good...keep at it...takes a while to go but smother dd's patch regularly, she might not lose the hair...good luck!

StripeyMamaSpanx · 28/01/2008 18:42

Shouldn't think so - its a fungal thing like athletes foot.

sounds like ringworm-a pretty harmless if unsightly fungal infection. My sister had this once.

shatteredmumsrus · 28/01/2008 18:53

My ds is 3 and started having what looked like cradle cap on his head over 6months ago. Took him docs they asked if he had been near any animals looks like a fungal infection such as ringworm. They gave him tablets, yes tablet and guess what he couldnt take them. They he was given a cream which didnt work either. Then after a few trips back to the docs, his hair had fell out by then and i was teling people he had eczema as it looked horrible. Eventually got referred to birmingham childrems hospital dermatology, they didnt know what it was either but prescribed an oral medicine called griseofulvin suspension, it tastes vile and he wouldnt take it for ages but has learnt that it is making his hair better. He has 8ml in morning and again at night and has been taking it for 10 weeks so far, a long time i know but it is really working.

duchesse · 28/01/2008 18:54

fwiw, tea tree oil seems to work well for us on fungal infections. Probably best to use dilute in another bland oil with little ones and if you're pregnant, but worth a try if you can't take the doc's medicine.

shatteredmumsrus · 28/01/2008 19:00

by the way they told me to take precautions such as seperate towels etc but to be honest that went out the window very quickly and none of us have got it

VictorianSqualor · 28/01/2008 19:07

I'm almost 100% sure it's ringworm now.

The patches I have are exactly the same as the pictures online.

Sorry to hear about your DS shattermumsrus, DS's has finally started to go down since he had the fucidin H, have they tried that??

no they did prescribe me something but no chemist had it and they all said its only available from hospitals, not sure of the name of it tho. What he has got now is working thank goodness i thought i was gonna have a bald 3yo son, i was getting really stressed about it. If it is ringworm then they can deal with it. its quite common apparently and doesnt mean your dirtly or anything. Horrible name tho i think they should change it.

VictorianSqualor · 28/01/2008 21:03

I've just been to the pharmacy at sainsburys, they say it is ringworm and have given us canesten.

OP posts:
shatteredmumsrus · 28/01/2008 21:05

might be worth going back to the quacks tho.ds had canesten but as soon as he stopped using it it came back almost imediately

VictorianSqualor · 28/01/2008 21:08

I'm going to call my doc in the morning and speak to him about it, I only ever discussed it with him on the 'phone, it was out of hours gps we saw everytime it got a 'diagnosis', hopefully he'll suggest treating DS orally as well as the cream. DD's has literally only just come up so I'm hopign the canesten will work with her, but like your DS, by the time anythign started to work on my DS it was already weeping and pusy and had hair falling out.

Keep using it until a couple of weeks after you think it's gone...I think that is the advice.
