Lactose intolerance in 1 year old?

Could this be a lactose intolerance?

My baby has gone through phases of acting like he has tummy pains. I would say this happens maybe once or twice a month. He crunches up and cries and screams and can't be soothed. I can't pinpoint any particular food that he has had that could have triggered it and as it was happening before he started eating solids I can only assume it could be his milk. Is it possible that when he has days when he drinks more milk than usual or has extra cheese or yogurt that this is causing him pain? The doctor wasn't very helpful and didn't take me very seriously and just said as it's not a constant it's hard to say. Also just to add his poos don't change during this time.

Any ideas?

It's extremely unlikely to be lactose in a baby, although it can happen.

Much more likely to be Cow's Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA). Do his symptoms sound anything like this?

tigertummy · 30/10/2022 08:55

@PritiPatelsMaker thanks for your reply. Some of the symptoms are the same. The sore tummy and the wind definitely but he doesn't have any rashes, runny poos, vomiting etc. He's just in pain. It's also not all the time which is why it's so hard to figure out what's going on

My dc who has daily allergy and other allergies, has been screaming like hell since he was born, every time I fed him my breast milk. I had to go on to very restricted diet excluding everything he is allergic to.
If it's a new thing now at 1, and only happens once or twice a month, I guess it's more likely that he is allergic to certain allergen that he is fed once or twice a month.
You need to push GP to be referred to the paed. My ds's GI doctor was able to test him and determine he had no intolerance. As well as my ds's allergy doctor figure out what he was allergic to, including something we never expected.

Can you not keep a food diary and see what triggers the pain

tigertummy · 30/10/2022 09:05

@dementedpixie we have been bit it's so tricky to pinpoint what it is. It's been happening since before he was on solids when he was just having formula which is what makes me think it's lactose or cows milk

Thanks @grapehyacinthisactuallyblue I think you're right. Trying to get a face to face GP appointment is a nightmare though!

dairy, not daily allergy, I'm not a native English speaker, but it was rather embarrassing mistake!

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 30/10/2022 09:28

How is his poo? If he is allergic or intolerant, it will effect the poo for sure?
FYI, my ds has other health problem, which took longer to get diagnosed. He was in severe pain after eating, it became more clear as he got older and able to express. It made it difficult for drs to diagnose I suppose, since he already had problem with reaction to allergen.
But he ended up having a surgery, due to his problem with digestive system, that was nothing to do with his allergy.

My ds's first referral to the allergy specialist was made by HV, not by GP.

Was your DS in pain after every meal?

His poos aren't anything out of the ordinary

I've got CMPA and don't vomit or have a rash, ever but was still diagnosed.

ttcchapter1 · 30/10/2022 10:27

My one year old after switching to whole milk and having two stints of norovirus after a trip abroad had really bad diarrhoea and smelly poo.

We switched to soya milk (any would do but we chose alro growing up milk).

Hes 20 months now and still on it but is slowly working up the milk ladder.

GP said this can happen when they switch from formula/breast to whole milk and just means they have a slight intolerance to lactose but it doesn't last forever. Just have to slowly work them up the milk ladder.

PritiPatelsMaker · 30/10/2022 12:25

Yes totally agree that a stomach upset can cause temporary lactose intolerance Halloween Wink

tigertummy · 30/10/2022 15:56

Thanks everyone! Sounds like I should push the GP for some help and maybe lower or cut out his dairy intake
