it started about a month ago and is getting worse every day. saw the doctor a couple of weeks ago and he prescribed Diprobase ointment. it is much worse now than it was. am making new appointment but in meantime does anyone have any suggestions to help it? I'm just so surprised she suddenly has it at this age. the worse she's had before is dry skin in winter. thanks in advance, Dinny

Interesting to hear about banana allergy, as DD1 has this, and I've yet to meet anyone else with it! DD1 has bad eczema though, despite our cutting out bananas (and kiwi and raw egg and citrus fruits) from the age of 7 months (she's now nearly 4. So not sure about the ongoing link between these.

In our case though, it's definitely made worse by heat (the sweat in creases). It's noticable that she doesn't get any on her face (thank heavens), and of course this isn't covered up! The only thing that keeps it under control is wet wrapping. We'd love to drop this, but every time we try it, she wakes up itchy in the middle of the night.

I have heard though, that contrary to what many people believe, eczema is often worse between the ages of 2 and 3, rather than as a very young baby i.e. it reaches a peak then. DD's is certainly better this year than last (although I think we're managing it better perhaps). The main thing is to try to break the itch scratch cycle.

what were the symptoms of banana allergy?, was the excema worse or wer there other symptoms as well? ds's excema that he had on his legs has now spread to his chest and back, and i am wondering about this.

misdee · 30/11/2004 10:02

try putting a tiny amount of banana on a clear patch of skin and watch for any reaction.

Sympathy Dinny.

My dd's eczema started at 9 (years that is)! It developed when she had molloscum.......they went and the eczema stayed. Hers has flared recently with the cold weather.

alibo · 30/11/2004 14:10

we've been using aveeno bath oil and cream, as recommended by mumsnet. it hasn't got rid of the excema, but his skin is a lot smoother in general.

Banana allergy - my DS developed eczema at around two months old. It affected his whole body but his face particularly was very bad. I can only describe it as red raw and weeping. I tried lots of creams and lotions, I tried leaving it alone. I tried bathing him every night, I tried bathing him once a week (this helped). When I look at his baby photos I can't believe it is the same child as the one with the lovely soft clear skin that he's got now. I could never kiss his cheeks.

He also used to vomit constantly. As soon as I stopped bananas in his diet this also stopped. His eczema cleared up in two weeks. Completely. Now he has the occasional banana (once a week at the most) and so far so good. I did let him have a banana every day for a week recently as an experiment to see if he had outgrown it and hey presto, the skin around his mouth started getting sore again.

Hope this helps.

thanks kbear, how did you decide to stop the babnas though??

alibo · 05/12/2004 09:02

bananas that should be!!

Yorkie girl, although you haven't changed products is it possible the products themselves have changed ingredient. Think this happened a few years ago with Persil for example.

DD's skin has gone so much clearer. Have been using Aveeno for a week-ish now. Seeing GP on Thurs - should I a, keep the appointment and b, just ask for prescription for Aveeno? Any ideas?

My daughter is just short of 2nd birthday. Has never had any skin blotches/dry patches or skin problems of any sort. 2 wks ago developed a bumpy rash under the skin - not red all down one side of body - has now spread and is continuing to spread down legs / arms to hands etc. Is slightly red in parts but no "angry"" rash. Skin is very bumpy and atarting to feel dry in places. GP diagnosed exema but am unsure as I would have thought that if Es had been prone to Exema would have 1) known before now 2) first appearance would not have spread over whole body. Am now thinking about referral need to know what I am dealing wih - no history of exema in family and v concerned as does not yet seem to be "clearing" now 2 weeks since first appeared. Cannot think of anything different that she is in contact with!!!! Advice pls on simalar experience or best place to take her. Do not fel confident with GP diagnosis.

dinny · 11/12/2004 20:09

Dells, my GP (who I do have confidence in) said unless you have changed something like washing powder/diet recently you'll prob never know why ezcema has started. I also have no family history of any allergies. DD's seemed to start when she was laid low with a virus. I reckon that may have triggered it. Have you been prescribed a cream?
