I don't think there is a yogurt or cheese substitute - sorry.

For the custard you can make your own using rice milk or oat milk, vanilla, corn starch and sugar - but check the old fashioned birds custard type powders as these may be OK (I can't remember offhand if they contain soya - you can get dairy free).

If you can invest in an ice cream maker you can make some great ice creams using rice or oat milk - and of course there are sorbets.

no, we had to avoid everything. There is a spread called Pure which is soya and dairy free (watch out because they do one type that does have soya called Pure Soya I think) but dd didn't really like it so we gave up on that too.

Just had fruit instead of youghurts and loads more fruit and veg over all. Dd is now 8 and eats an amazing variety of fruit and veg and I'm sure it was because of her having so much of it when she was little!

oh adn someone might suggest goat's milk products - just be careful, because he may react to those too as some children do so if it's a life threatening allergy, I wouldn't take the chance.

foxinsocks · 25/01/2008 11:27

oh and dd is 7 not 8

bekkaboo · 25/01/2008 21:02

hi guys thanks a lot,did your children outgrow this? I really cannot see any end in site.

Just to confirm thee should be no reason he cant have rice milk should they? god that would be so much easier never even crossed my mind.

I am sure birds old fashioned custard powder is dairy and soya free, double check but I definatley used this when dd1 was lactose and soya intolerant.

birds custard powder is fine - just checked the ingredients.

I make a white or herby sauce using ds's milk instead of a cheese sauce

no alternative to yogurt that I know of.

and let me know if you find some good bread that doesnt have soya in - I buy tesco finest oatmeal / wholemeal bread, but would like to try something different.

I did toy with the idea of making my own cheese using his milk - there must be a huge market for soya and dairy free 'dairy' products..

I use fruit pots (the type you but for weaning) instead of yoghurts. dds actually prefer these now, although not really many calories. You can use rice milk to make sauces although you have to experimanet a lot to get the texture right and they end up slightly sweeter than normal.
