Egg allergy - how did hospital deal with it?

Hello! I’m looking for any info on recent visits you have had to Paeds for allergies and what they do to help with them.

My LO is 12 months old and we discovered an egg allergy a couple of months ago. Went to the GP a few weeks ago and have finally been offered an appointment with Paeds - end of March next year! I wanted to see what happened to others at their first appointment and if there’s anything I could do in the meantime.

LO was sick a few hours after having scrambled egg, so not something I want to repeat if hospital will do tests etc. When I spoke to my health visitor she thought there wouldn’t be any tests offered but they would just get us to try with set things with egg in. Also don’t want to make his allergy worse by waiting (if that’s a thing).

Thanks for reading and in advance for any advice!

My son has an egg allergy discovered at six months, we were referred to an allergy specialist by a&e as he has CMPA and other food allergies. His first appointment was for bloods and now has annual skin prick tests. If it’s a non IGE reaction (which is delayed) you will be guided by a dietician to complete the egg ladder. The usual advice is to avoid anything containing egg until they’ve been seen/spoken to by the hospital. Hope that helps

HV is right paediatrics won't test for anything. My DS has an egg allergy. We saw paediatrics at 10ms old but that's because we had two hospital admittals. His allergy subsidies with steroids so has not escalated to requiring epinephrine yet (not that I'm planning on exposing him to test the theory!). Paediatrics asked what the reaction was like, reviewed hospital notes. Told us to stay away from egg until 2.5yr old then try the egg ladder 🤔dietician said the same thing. Paediatrics won't consider allergy prick testing until 2.5 here, we could have had a blood test but they said it can be quite distressing for babies so wouldn't recommend that either. Since we know he has an egg allergy. Nursery are great about it.

I'm surprised you've been referred for this, most kids grow out of an egg allergy.

DD1 was sick after having egg twice, so we cut it out completely for a few months and then went up the egg ladder. She'd grown out of it completely by 18 months.

I did call the GP after the second time she had egg and was sick (so we knew it was definitely the egg) because DH has an anaphylactic allergy so I wasn't sure if that made DD more high risk. They weren't fussed and didn't do anything beyond say that she'd probably outgrow it.

My lo had a reaction to egg in February this year at 1 year 8 months, he had never wanted to eat eggs before or things containing eggs strangely enough but he tipped some raw egg over himself while I was cooking and came out in a horrible rash straight away.
We got referred by gp to the allergy clinic and had the appointment in July. They did an allergy test on him which showed he had an allergy and then I spoke to a dietitian about the egg ladder which we are doing. As his dad has some pretty severe allergies they also tested for others but thankfully he didn't have any.

Thanks all for your replies, that’s really helpful. We will wait for his appointment! :-)

Both my DC have multiple allergies including to egg.

DS was skin prick tested just before 6 months old after several reactions to various allergens. He was positive to egg. We were told to avoid and at around age 4 they did a baked egg challenge which he failed. Aged 15 ingesting baked egg makes him very very illl.

DD was tested at 6 months old because of the severity of DS'd allergies. She was allergic to egg. We avoided until a baked agh challenge at age 4 was passed. She can tolerate egg at age 13 (meringue, mayo etc) but haven't managed to persuade her to try just egg even though she can eat meringue.
