Tastiest dairy free alternatives

NoDairyNoProblem · 24/08/2022 21:57

As my username suggests I’m trying to embrace going dairy free but I am sat here doing my first online shop and it’s so overwhelming.

Dairy/lactose seems to leave me feeling awful so looking for the tastiest alternatives you can suggest for milk, yogurt, butter, cheese, cream etc

  • Stork for baking (can't tell the difference)
  • Jus roll pastry is all vegan
  • Oatly cream is great and whips
  • Oat milk generally is good.
  • Swedish glace ice cream is good.
  • You can check out kosher shops (online or local) as lots of Kosher food is dairy free so lots of dairy free versions of junk food available crisps, chocolate etc
ISeeTheLight · 24/08/2022 22:10

Vegan magnums taste pretty much exactly like the original.
We use the vitalite spread usually. Stork block in wrapper is dairy free for baking. Or the vegan flora baking block is good too.
Got LoveRaw Cream wafers (white chocolate version) to try recently and they smelled amazing - theyre basically kinder buenos. DD (who has the allergy) said they were super yummy. Found in ASDA.
The oatly custard (usually in fridge in sainsburys) is nice.
Not found a great cheese though. Really struggled with that when I was breastfeeding and had to be dairy free.

StickywithSuncream · 24/08/2022 22:10

Green vie ‘mozzarella’

DottyLittleRainbow · 24/08/2022 22:14

Flora plant butter
Applewood smoked vegan cheese makes great cheesy sauce
Sheese - mozzarella and cheddar style, melt well on pizzas etc
Nush Camembert is amazing
Oatly barista or Lidl barista oat milk great in tea, coffee, cereal, hot chocolate or to drink
Swedish glacé ice cream
Tony’s chocolonely dark almond and sea salt

DottyLittleRainbow · 24/08/2022 22:15

(Sheese is the Bute Farms ones)

PestorPeston · 24/08/2022 22:18

Aldi do a chilled pizza dough, so you can make your own.
Many vegan cheeses are disappointing.

Applewood smoked slices are great for pizza but contains a mere 1.5% protein www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/vegan-applewood-slices-200g

Nush cream cheese with chives tastes nice and has 6.9% protein www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/nush-almond-mlk-chese-chive-spread/482955-724459-724460

Oat kefir has a great tang, I pour it over crumble www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/biotiful-plant-oat-kefir-original-250ml

Rebel milk shakes are a real indulgence www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/rebel-kitchen-organic-mylk-shake-chocolate-hazelnut/852932-704461-704462

Oatly cream fraiche is a good all rounder www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/oatly-creamy-oat-fraiche/689277-671814-671815

If dairy milk makes you feel awful it is best to stick to black coffee when out as a milk wand cannot be properly cleaned. I learnt this the hard way.

NoDairyNoProblem · 24/08/2022 22:22

Oh thank you all 🥰

I like oat milk in my coffee but have the fear of it in tea. Will give it a try tomorrow.

What about bread etc? I considered baking but didn’t think about shop bought 🤦🏻‍♀️

I have abandoned the online shop and will go to Sainsburys tomorrow armed with my reading glasses.

You can get lactose free milk and cheese if the issue is just lactose.

MrsMoggy · 24/08/2022 22:23

For milk I prefer oat milk, usually whatever own brand from the supermarket. Butter wise if it’s “proper” butter then sainsburys plant pioneers, or Flora light if just margarine. For cream I like the Elmlea plant based. Yoghurts either vanilla Alpro or Tesco own brand fromage frais. Asda do an OK pack of 4 soya yoghurts too.

Cheese was the hardest to adjust to but got easier the more time that passed from eating “real” cheese. I like Asda own grated, Violife grated, Violife Greek style and Mexicana Vegan.

NoDairyNoProblem · 24/08/2022 22:26

Great tip @PestorPeston, I will stick to the vegan coffee shop for now.

@Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas it’s been suggested I cut all dairy for a few weeks to try and figure it out.

Agree with the PP, try lactose-free milk - you can buy it everywhere. Most people who have a problem with dairy really have a problem with lactose. Arla ‘Lacto-free’ also do cream, butter and cheese. You can also get lactose-free yogurt. More nutritious/less processed than the vegan alternatives?

Fairislefandango · 24/08/2022 22:27

Following with interest. I'm both dairy and gluten free atm unfortunately! I was going to recommend the vegan Magnums too - they are barely distinguishable from the normal ones!

I'm going to try some of these cheese suggestions, but I'm a bit sceptical! The few vegan cheeses I've tried so far (including a smoky applewood one) have been utterly revolting and I've thrown them straight in the bin!

CherryMaple · 24/08/2022 22:28

The dietitian suggested that DD try lactose-free instead of cutting out all dairy, to see if lactose was the problem. It worked for her.

Fairislefandango · 24/08/2022 22:29

I'm not a fan of oat milk tbh - it has a sweetness/richness that I don't like in tea (I barely drink coffee). I find alpro organic no sugars soya milk best.

stillherenow · 24/08/2022 22:33

I'm an expert at this 😁

Oatly
Sainsburys have a good dairy free cakes range
Pure sunflower margarine is nice and also great for cooking
Oatly also do custard
Dark chocolate is dairy free but moo free chocolate also good

NoDairyNoProblem · 24/08/2022 22:33

@CherryMaple that’s interesting, thanks.

stillherenow · 24/08/2022 22:34

I still use oatly even though dd no longer needs to avoid dairy. We don't have normal milk I find it too thin now

Jollyandbright · 24/08/2022 22:37

Pretty much all the supermarkets do barista style oat milks at a reasonable price,
try to avoid oatly if you can, they are not owed by a good company.

if you are wanting a flavour free milk for tea almond or rice milk work well.

swwdish glacé is still the best ice cream in the market.

vegan cheese is very much down to your personal preferences.
I prefer to make my own nut cheeses.

whiteroseredrose · 24/08/2022 22:41

A few years ago there was only soya milk which separated out in a hot drink and vegan cheese that would be fed as a punishment in purgatory. Now there is lots of choice. My favourites are

Milk - Oat milk from the milkman or Minor Figures regular or light.

Spread - Naturli tastes like spreadable butter.

Cheese - Honestly Tasty blue or Fauxmagerie Brixton Blue. Fetamorphosis for salads. Honestly Tasty Camembert for baking. Kinda Farmhouse cheese spread and Faux Lox and dill. All from online Vegan Supermarket Vegan Kind. I haven't found a cheddar block equivalent that I can tolerate.

Yogurt - Oatly. Greek style.
