My lb was prescribed nutramigen 1 three days ago for a suspected cow milk allergy, he broke out in eczema and had blood and mucas in his poops...he had taken to the milk fine, the first bottle was just a bit hard to go down...when I got up this morning his eczema had flared up worse than ever ...took him to out of hours drs...she give him a good check over said he is in great health otherwise, to give the new milk two weeks to settle...I've notice he isn't drinking as much as he used to when he was on cow and gate, he would guzzle 7oz bottles sometimes hitting 36oz a day...and today he has been very sleepy anyone else have this issue

Has he been referred to the Allergy Clinic yet @La123?

La123 · 23/07/2022 22:07

@PritiPatelsMaker not yet, Dr wanted to do a 4 week trial with nutramigen, then slowly reintroduce his previous formula to see if its a definite cow milk allergy

I wouldn't be too happy with that plan. I'd read up on the Nice Guidelines and ask for referrals to the Allergy Clinic and a Paediatric Dietitian.

La123 · 24/07/2022 09:00

The dr mentioned referring lo to moo clinic if he is still the same, I felt it wasn't a great plan, speaking with my friend this is the process she went through with her little girl..she said they do a trial first just to rule out the possibility of something else as the formula is so expensive to give on prescription...though today my Lo skin has cleared up a lot and he seems a lot happier..Its so hard as we trust are drs to be doing the right thing for are children...his poops have changed again today too..they had been like a green paste for 3 days today they where brown and quite runny ...its all very confusing 😕

It takes two weeks from excluding cows milk for it to clear form the system. So I wouldn’t expect a real improvement for at least another week.

if baby’s not taking as much milk you need to keep a close eye. Ring the GP on Monday if that’s no better. If he’s too sleepy to feed, ring 111 for an out of hours GP.

La123 · 24/07/2022 20:27

@Carlichimp oki doki hopefully will see some improvement in a week, he used to eat way more than what was recommended for his age between 36 and 38 oz...starting to think he is maybe not in pain anymore and catching up on some sleep, he wasn't napping great before...he has been better today just been taken small bottles 120ml at each feed but waking up to eat and going back down for a nap...he has had plenty of wet nappies which I'm taking as a good sign , ya just worry so much about them xx

My little boy has cmpa. We started on Nutramigen and now on Neocate as his symptoms came back after 3-4 weeks on Nutramigen so unfortunately you do have to wait a while to see how it goes.
we also did the milk challenge last month to confirm it was an allergy so it sounds like the doctors are doing the right thing. We didn’t get a dietitian referral until after the allergy was confirmed.
Also I was speaking to the Infant Feeding team at my hospital about how as soon as my baby was put on these formulas he drank less and put on weight at a slower rate than before and apparently there’s new research that shows these formulas make babies put on weight at a similar rate to breastfed babies and that because the protein is broken down or in amino acid formulas, completely broken down, it makes them realise they’re fuller faster. So maybe that’s why you’re noticing a decrease in milk intake.
As long as he doesn’t continue to be in a lot of discomfort and shows signs of improvement (as pp have said can take weeks), then I’d try not to worry about how much he’s drinking.

PritiPatelsMaker · 24/07/2022 21:34

How much does he weigh? He should be having roughly 2.5 floz per pound in weight in 24 hours.

If he was having more than that previously, could he have been over feeding because of the pain he was in?

newhere989 · 24/07/2022 21:38

My baby was 6 weeks on nutramigen and it did not help her. Nutramigen is just hydrolysed lactose free milk with probiotics in it.
After 6 weeks of no improvement in symptoms, she was put on neocate and all symptoms disappeared immediately.

La123 · 24/07/2022 22:09

@Pizzaandsushi thankyou, I feel better about how much he is taking now just have to relax and hopefully my lo be sorted and feeling lots better 😊 @PritiPatelsMaker I'm not sure what he ways now , he was last weighed 4 weeks ago and was 13 1b 3...has his 12 week jabs this week so hopefully get weighed again then...I think your right about the confort eating ..thanks so much everyone...

@newhere989 my niece was the same , nutramigen didn't agree with her at all, it took 3 different formula's before she settled, good your little one settled on new milk

It’s very difficult not to worry I know! Feeding for me became a thing I dreaded and still to some extent obsess over.
I wish I didn’t because it is stealing so much of my joy being with my baby who looks so healthy, is VERY alert, constantly wriggling and happy (most of the time 😂) baby and yet I always worry he doesn’t drink enough. Plus I try and think of the fact if I’d have breastfed I wouldn’t have a clue how much he drank.
Also to add, for some reason, in Australia when a baby reaches 3 months they recommend the milk intake and how much the baby actually needs/wants decreases to 120 ml per kg instead of the previous 150-200 ml per kg. No idea why it’s different here in the UK (which sticks to 150-200 until 6 months) but I would also say my little boy has followed this decrease when he reached 3 months (he’s now 4.5 months) so that also makes me worry less about how much he drinks.

La123 · 25/07/2022 06:54

@Pizzaandsushi think it's only natural for us to worry and over think everything, just want the best for them...just have to remind areselfs that babies tend to take what they need...that's odd how Australia do things, spose different countries have different guidelines...but as long as you Lo is happy and thriving your doing an amazing job

Was just wondering how did you all make up your bottles...I was a bit thrown with using boiled water at room temp...so I've just been making up bottles and leaving to side and adding powder when needed ...

OP posts:
Pizzaandsushi · 25/07/2022 08:36

Yes that confused me too but that’s what I do or I have Nuby rapid cool flasks where I cool the boiling water down first and then add the powder to the room temp water.
I spoke to a paediatrician at Alder Hey about this as I was confused how that would sterilise the formula powder and he said it’s about killing stuff in the water that’s important not the formula.
you also have to do the same with neocate formula and my friend who’s baby is on the same formula phoned the company to double check and they said yes you add it to room temp boiled water. She has a perfect prep and puts the hot shot in first, then the cold water to make room temp water before adding the formula.
i think with the Nutramigen it has to be room temp so you don’t kill the probiotic.
Can you tell this is all something I’ve obsessed over!? 😂

La123 · 25/07/2022 09:49

Ahhh good, I had tried to get in touch with my HV to confirm it, my sister in law said that's how you do it, she used the perfect prep, it's just been playing on me am I really doing this right...but that's good that confirms it 😊...I have the nuby too and someone kindly give me there prep machine...handy that you have options how to prepare the milk , here it's better to obsess over making sure your doing every thing right ...I can relax a bit more now 😊

Hi guys, my lb has now been prescribed neocate finally....the nutramigen was working for him fine until he started drinking more milk...was just wondering how you all prepare bottles for neocate as the nutramigen said room temperature, where as neocate says to leave water for at least 30 minutes thanks...

OP posts:
Ehneh · 22/09/2022 14:01

I use the prep machine but if I don't have that I will use boiled, cooled water- cooled to the temperature that it is not scalding my wrist

La123 · 22/09/2022 16:18

I was boiling water and setting up two bottles at a time and leaving them to the side and adding the nutramigen when needed...I have a nuby so maybe be better to use that to cool water down then add formula to water
