A really worried Mumma 😞

My little girl is 14 weeks old. Since the beginning she has had explosive poos, shes always been formula fed and was on Aptamil, after time I noticed her poo became runny.

Around 6 w/o she become very fussy taking a bottle. On and off, crying, arching her back. We changed her milk to Kendamil, saw a slight improvement with her taking a bottle at the beginning but then become fussy again.

She’s had quite alot of poos with mucus in at times. She’s pretty gassy, always sneezed quite alot since she was born, coughs occasionally, splutters and coughs taking a bottle.

She also had posterior tongue tie which was done a few weeks ago.

We tried Nutramigen but did not see an improvement, if anything it made her more sick and she generally doesn’t spit up. DR also given us a gaviscon, again no improvements.

I am so worried about her, I feel I cannot feed her out in public because it is so distressing

😞

we have GP appointment again today

Do you think this sounds more like CMPA or reflux / silent reflux.

Thank you!

Argh sorry op that sounds really hard!

Great you have another appointment with your GP today - just outline your concerns exactly as you have done here.

Babies with CMPA can also have a reaction to goats milk (the Kendamil one you mentioned) and if they have sever CMPA even the extensively hydrolysed version (Neutramigen) can cause a reaction - there are completely animal milk free versions that the GP might prescribe next.

I have experience with CMPA but not with reflux so can't comment on the reflux side of things.

Good luck - hopefully the GP can sort you out or refer you to a specialist!

You poor thing, and your baby too.

my daughter was like this (nightmare). At 8 weeks old, and after a couple of hospital visits she got given a prescription formula called Neocate. She had a milk protein allergy. She did outgrow it around 12 months old.
this stuff was alive and sanity saver!!

PraiseBee · 06/07/2022 14:13

First thought is to rule out dairy intolerance/allergy. Flowers

katnyps · 06/07/2022 15:44

Hopefully the neonate works for you! If not back to the docs. We had skin issues with ours as a result of CMPA and egg (common with milk allergies) and it was back to the docs every couple of weeks for various creams!

I feel so low and worried
Its nice to read a success story like yours
The GP has given us Neocate
Managed to give 2 oz an hour ago. Hoping she takes more before going to bed. @Rebecca75 was your LO fussy taking bottles too?

Thank you @katnyps oh bless x

@Catchingrainbows
she was fine with bottles. I think she was so hungry that the first time she had the formula she literally guzzled down the whole bottle and zonked out, no writhing, farting, pain. She must have been exhausted from little sleep and constant pain. She literally changed into a new baby overnight.
I really hope this works for you🤗

imhereforthecake · 07/07/2022 07:53

I could have written this!
My little boy is 5 weeks and having the same issues plus vomiting.
Tried gaviscon - rubbish.
Milk for reflux - made him constipated.
Now trying kendamil alongside omeprazole- saw a little improvement but feels like we are going backwards again.
I'm starting to think possible cmpa. Have a follow up appointment tomorrow so will see what they say.
Sorry I don't have any answers but you aren't alone!

Catchingrainbows · 07/07/2022 10:58

Hope you get on ok at your appointment @imhereforthecake let me know.
we were prescribed Neocate yesterday
My LG managed a 4.5 oz bottle yesterday afternoon and 5 oz before bed
With a fuss still but I’m just so glad she ate.

it’s ever so worrying x

It can take a few weeks for the reactions (mucus in stool, discomfort, gas etc) to die down after changing the milk. So give it time before considering changing again.

Definitely sounds like CMPA and my baby was exactly the same.

Neocate can cause nappy rash at first - let their tummies adjust and it'll clear up quickly.

If you're still finding tummy issues on neocate your baby could have reflux as well, and silent reflux doesn't include vomiting but lots of distress.

Infant Gaviscon is a pile of shit in my opinion - creates constipation issues and isn't all that effective. Might me worth asking your GP for omeprazole instead to use alongside your babies milk. God send. Again, it can take time to work.

While it's difficult now - you sound like you have a GP that is on the ball and babies change so rapidly. Mine has just turned 1 and basically all symptoms of CMPA and reflux are either managed or gone completely.

Catchingrainbows · 07/07/2022 19:02

Thank you so much @NCgoingdry
the pedi recommended omeprazole, but the GP said to just try the formula first and if it doesnt work, go back to normal formula with omeprazole! But that just doesn’t make sense to me as my LG has explosive, mucys stools on normal formula.

I am going to ask for the omeprazole, as there are so many signs she has reflux/silent reflux. I am hoping it allows her to take a bottle better

Agree that it does sound like CMPA but I'd also get her TT checked again AB's it can reattach.

That is my second born including the arching sneezing coughing etc. Except that he is breastfed. Basking him in sunlight helps. I am ordering biogaia probiotic drops to start at 3 months. He is 2 months now. Heard that helps!!
