i have been weaning my ds (6mths) for about 4 weeks. he has had the usual baby rice and fruit and veg. I decided to give him some cereal which you add water to and his face swelled up within about 15 mins. i thought it was the fruit but i then gave some sweet potato with 1 tsp of cows milk in and the same thing happened. i looked at the packet of cereal and there is milk in that too. gp is referring for allergy testing wich could take up to 3 months...am at a bit of a loss of what to try and what not to try next. do i avoid all dairy at the moment. whats the best thing to do now. am breastfeeding so am i to put my own milk to things as much as possible. he is going to nursery soon so am a bit scared of him having a reaction there especially as he hasn't had many different foods at all. sorry for the long post ....please advise thanks

Don't panic, my dd was allergic to milk too. Whole body went red and itchy when she had her first bottle of formula (around 4 months)

I kept her off dairy, she had things like soya milk, soya yoghurts etc and I added breast milk to cereals etc

Started reintroducing dairy a bit later, I think around a year. It gave her a red chin at first, but she seemed okay with little bits ofcheese, then yoghurt and finally by aged 2 she was guzzling cow's milk no problem.

We saw a dietician, they said don't panic just take away the foods that are making her allergic and concentrate on the other things that she is not allergic to. If you are still bf then she is not going to miss out on anything.

Are you part Asian? It is apparently fairly common in Asian communities to be lactose intolerant.

Usually they grow out of it (or so i was told). Stick to your GP's advice though...

no i am not asian. both myself and my dh have hayfever / eczema and my ds has eczema too. so this may be why?? thanks for your advice will try to avoid dairy. will have to look out for dairy free cheese marg and yogurts etc if they do them. do you know if he might be prone to other types of allergies eg gluten fish etc
thanks again

It looks like my 6.5mo DD also has a cows milk allergy. We had 3 trips to A&E in a week when her face swelled up. Did you go to hospital or to your GP? Would definitely recommend going to hospital if it happens again. She has had blood tests, seen the consultant paedatrician and the dietician (as well as being fast tracked to dermatology which we'd been waiting for for months).

If she's not had any kind of reaction while you've been breastfeeding, then you are best to carry on and express if you can if you want to give porridge etc. Be careful with soya, as many children who have a cows milk allergy also have a soya allergy (either 1/3 or 2/3 - can't remember).

You said your ds has eczema. Is it possible this is realted to dairy? I've given up dairy for the last week or so (on the instructions of the consultant on the last visit to hospital)and she looks like a different person. Not sure yet whether this is to do with diet, new creams, antihistimines or a combination though. You really need to see a dietician for advice. Keep pushing for your referrals - they shouldn't keep you waiting so long when your ds had such an obvious reaction.

Regarding other allergies - we have been told to introduce any new foods in very small quantities (pin head size for 3 days) in case of any reaction, and to not try egg or shellfish until she is at least a year. Apparantly, having eczema does make you more likely to have allergic reactions to things.

Sorry for the long post. Best of luck

thanks for your responses.
i haven't given up dairy myself but his eczema is pretty good at the moment. i am still waiting for an appointment at the hospital , hopefully will get a date this week. i think i will lay off the dairy products until he is seen by the hospital...there are lots of other things we can try am just trying to take things slowly.
