Life a misery with constant blocked nose

Every night I wake up multiple times with my nose blocked and sometimes sneezing as well. This time of year is worse than ever with it being hay fever season.

I take fexenodine (strong prescription antihistamine) as well as an over the counter antihistamine daily, I have an air purifier next to my bed. I have a prescription nasal spray which I take before bed and a nasal spray which I take when I wake up with a blocked nose. That spray doesn't even work anymore.

I'm at my wits end. Does anyone else live like this? The only other possible thing I can do is get rid of the bedroom carpet and replace it with laminate.

I generally am allergic to lots of things but rhinitis is the worst part of it.

Can anyone think of anything else I could do?

Could you be intolerant to cows milk protein?

My son used to suffer a lot from blocked nose, and it turns out he’s milk protein (not lactose) intolerant? After he switched to goats milk (has smaller protein in it), it improved a lot. He can eat hard cheese and butter, as the protein is processed out if it, but not soft cheese or ordernary milk. He’s not allergic to it, so if he does have milk, he’s fine, but gets the old symptoms back again.

(not a doctor)

try nasal douching? Mix a tsp of salt, tsp of bicarbonate of soda, pint of boiled water; leave it to cool and use a nasal syringe or irrigation kit to rinse three times daily.

or move house to the coast. The sea air is really good.

Thank you both so much! Actually I do improve when we're abroad on holiday as I don't like the taste of milk in other countries so I don't drink it. I'll try that and the nasal douching too. I'll try anything to be fair!! I'll see if I can get back to sleep now.

Have you considered having your mattress and pillows sanitised? I recently had ours cleaned by a company called Cleanmybed and I was amazed at what came out! We have all slept better and have reduced allergy symptoms as a result. I am not sure if they have a team in your area but here is the link to their website for you to look at and make some enquiries. Good luck!

Sublingual immunotherapy. My ds had it. it was a big commitment to take meds everyday for 3 years, but it's worth it, and now symptom free. .

How long have you been using the decongestant nasal spray? They can make the problem worse if used long-term

PilatesPeach · 12/05/2022 13:29

Yes a neti pot I got one from Amazon for a tenner as PP above said it slooshes out your sinuses I got 60 sachets of the salt for a few quid and do it daily in one nostril out the other and then do other side so half of the pot per nostril it is not uncomfortable and I feel miles better!

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 13/05/2022 13:18

Is it a steroid nasal spray? They can be used long term and are better than a decongestant.

SilverSpring · 13/05/2022 13:20

What’s the spray? Some are better than others

gigibea · 13/05/2022 19:01

I could have written this. I do daily antihistamine and a steroid nasal spray but nothings helping at the moment. My nose is also quite puffy looking, does anyone else have that?

DrBrennerFan · 13/05/2022 19:03

Handyweatherstation · 13/05/2022 19:05

We got an air purifier recently and that's helping: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07VVK39F7?th=1
