Coeliac in a four year old

Ridcully82 · 29/03/2022 20:05

Just found out four year old has Coeliac disease. Understand the diet/cross contamination bit,but would feel like another practical step to get a really good Coeliac friendly cookbook, ideally that's good for families. All suggestions welcome, please.

Can I please ask how you got this diagnosis?
My son is 4 and I suspect he has this.

Currently going private to investigate this but stool sample doesn't seem to suggest it's this.

We have bloods booked for next week.

Xx

Ridcully82 · 29/03/2022 20:16

GP referral, then bloods. Hope it goes well for you and him

Our son was diagnosed just before he turned four; he's 17 now. Tbh, I found ' gluten free' cookbooks a bit of a waste of time - they either suggested endless lists of really complicated ingredients, or they simply put 'gluten free flour' instead of 'flour' etc. If I were you, I'd stock up on some Doves gf flour of various types, a decent gf soy sauce, and some gf stock cubes - then just do some serious label checking and adapt your usual cooking. Unless you want to bake... In which case... good luck! Grin

CMOTDibbler · 29/03/2022 20:42

For normal meals, I wouldn't bother as its so easy to substitute soy sauce, stock cubes, gravy granules and gf pasta. For baking, the Becky Excel books are great and not at all worthy like some of the GF cook books I have.
BTW, don't get depressed over buying GF bread, pasta or crackers that are a disaster. None of them are like the real thing, and what one person thinks is a tolerable substitute is not anothers, so if I tell you the Warburtons GF tiger loaf is my favoured bread currently and you try it and think its awful, don't worry. Though I'll have been GF 26 years this year so my standards are pretty low!

Ridcully82 · 29/03/2022 20:50

Thank you all.
CMOTdibbler, thank you, I've just found out about Becky in the last half hour, and want to get cooking now looking at her recipes! (DD loves Yorkshire puddings and gravy, so glad we have an idea for that)
What you say about substitutions ,and just adapt our style around that, makes sense. I think a part of it is a practical distraction,as was about if a suprise as both GP and consultant seemed to think it was unlikely,so caught us off guard.

Follow Becky excell on Instagram and buy her books!

Picklesandbeans · 29/03/2022 21:03

My daughter was 4 when diagnosed too. Becky Excel all the way.

CMOTDibbler · 29/03/2022 21:10

For a quick dinner, Waitrose have GF yorkies which are lovely and can be frozen, so I can just grab them out of the freezer, some Bisto best gravy, lovely!
Ocado is brilliant for GF - you can filter by gluten free, they have a massive GF range, but you can also put an alert filter on to tell you about gluten in the ingredients - this isn't infallible but stops you clicking through to look at the ingredients to be disappointed so much. Even if you don't do your shop on Ocado it will help you get the hang of what normal foods are gluten free and what is out there. Things like the lush M&S milk and cookies spread that you wouldn't think is GF is for instance.
There's a great gluten free fish and chips group on FB that is worth joining to find all those places that don't advertise online.

Picklesandbeans · 29/03/2022 21:16

Also join Coeliac uk and get the scanner etc

ParisNext · 29/03/2022 21:24

Agree just substitute flours etc. But be really careful with maltodextrin as it’s Malt so gluten but might not appear in bold on ingredients. It makes me and my daughter poorly. A poster said about bisto best gravy but I wouldn’t be able to use it. All the big supermarkets do gluten free gravy granules though in the free from aisle and not expensive. Beware soy sauce, some stock cubes etc. Alll your family meals can be the same pretty much.

Ridcully82 · 29/03/2022 21:26

Got the Ocado order booked in, Becky's How to make anything GF is coming Friday, and book marked her website 👍 think she'll help a lot. Thank you, everyone.

Maltodextrin is Gluten Free according to Coeliac UK www.coeliac.org.uk/frequently-asked-questions/can-i-eat-maltodextrin/#:~:text=Maltodextrin%20is%20gluten%2Dfree.,processed%20to%20remove%20the%20gluten.

Obviously different people react to other things, and especially in the gut healing stage. I couldn't eat citrus or pineapples (OMG the mouth ulcers) for a couple of years after diagnosis (and obv before) but as I healed my body could cope with it again

Chrispackhamspoodle · 10/04/2022 21:39

My DD age 13 has just been diagnosed with coeliac. @CMOTDibbler she can't eat pineapple as she gets mouth ulcers. So many symptoms that she has had over the years are finally making sense.Lots of good advice here thanks.

notapizzaeater · 10/04/2022 21:49

Gf yorkshires :
90g GF plain flour (I prefer Asda)
Heaped tablespoon cornflour
4 eggs
Milk to double cream consistency

Cook as normal ! They freeze well

I pop any leftover mix in the fridge and I add either water to thin it down or baking powder and make thin pancakes or American pancakes the next day

MummyItsallaboutyou · 10/04/2022 21:56

Agree with Becky Excel for baking. I also follow myglutenfreeguide on Instagram. She has good recipes on her website. I'm on the children with coeliac disease FB group.
It'll take time, but will soon all become second nature. We're 50/50 coeliac/gluten eaters in our house. We do have 'normal' bread etc. I've zoned the kitchen - we have 2 toasters, separate cupboards and label things like butter so we know what is what!

Nejnej · 10/04/2022 21:58

Becky Excell also has a Facebook group for questions and tips, very helpful!
