Has anyone ever had a histamine intolerance? What did you do to fix it?

Yes I have this … well I think I do as it is hard to diagnose.

What are your symptoms ?

I do a low histamine diet and take high dose anti histamines which helps but I still have symptoms .

I find a lot of doctors don’t understand this so it has been quite a difficult road to get treatment.

Itchy swollen eyes and then dry wrinkled skin, and itchy jaw and hives on neck ! I have seen about Dao supplements to help block the histamine have you tried this? Do you know what sets your off? What are your symptoms? Have u spoken to a doctor? X

Hi I have histamine intolerance. I was diagnosed by a menopause consultant - Tina Peers - she has info on her website. I suspect that i have had it all my life but the symptoms got really bad after the menopause. My main symptoms are itchy skin, sinus problems and acid reflux/indigestion.
Anti histamines help with the itchiness and i have a nose spray for the blocked nose. I had nasal polyps removed in 2020 and that also helped.
The only surefire way to sort it though is to follow a restricted diet. Unfortunately it's not really sustainable long term particularly if you want to be able to eat out! I have used DAO supplements if I'm going to drink alcohol or eat in a restaurant. My GP isn't interested and tells me to control it with over the counter anti histamines.
I avoid all processed food, processed meat and anything aged, leftovers, fermented food, citrus fruit, tomatoes, aubergines, spinach, chocolate and try not to drink too much tea and coffee. The list is endless! There's a couple of good websites with recipes etc - www.histamineintolerance.org.uk and the best food list is at www.histaminintoleranz.ch
If you can follow a restricted diet for a month that should help and then you can re introduce things to see what you can tolerate or not!

I get a range of symptoms . Flushing and blood pressure changes . Gastric issues . Anaphylaxis every few weeks and I now carry epi pens . I think
Mine was made worse by the menopause too as the anaphylaxis started a couple of years ago .
My GP prescribed the antihistamines and epi pens .
The low histamine diet is pretty tough but it helps. I have heated mixed things about DAO but am going to ask for mast cell stabilising meds as I also have MCAS diagnosis .

Hey - I'm interested in this histamine intolerance thing too. Looking back, I think I've teetered on the edge of it throughout my life. But taking estrogen seems to bring it on big time.

I tried a combined pill when I was 21yo (I'm now 44yo so that was some time ago!) and it brought on the same symptoms I'm battling now on HRT...

I get weird throbbing throughout my body - especially at night, sometimes before sleep, sometimes waking me up during the night - and I think that is associated with an episode of high blood pressure. (I'm v fit and active with normal BP usually and a low BMI.) I had to do a week of blood pressure monitoring (due to one high reading in the surgery as a result of this!) and the monitor said 'irregular pulse' about 50% of the time, so I believe I'm also getting palpitations of the fluttery jittery sort.

I also have a watery eye and a drippy nose - which gets worse after eating, resulting in a wet cough for about an hour or so afterwards.

And I have joint pain which has been thoroughly checked out with no other known causes. It has improved on the HRT but not resolved.

Apparently there's a correlation between histamine intolerance and hypermobility - I read that 80% of people with histamine intolerance are also hypermobile. And guess what... I'm hypermobile. I also have a history of mild endometriosis, which is also associated with it and obviously there's an estrogen connection there.

I am now trying a low histamine diet, to see if that helps. I'm only on day 3 so far.... I'm also taking vitamin C 3-4x a day, magnesium, and I've got quercetin and L-glutamine on order. The diet SUCKS.... I was waiting to see if I really think this is what I have before I get the DAO and the histamine friendly probiotics...
