I use Ecover non bio and Ecover fabric conditioner and it suddenly dawned on me that they maybe the cause of DS's rash which incidentally doesn't seem to bother him. He is on solids and has a varied diet and I did cut out pureed apple in case that was the cause but while the rash subsides it flairs up even without giving him more apple. I then wondered today if I should start washing his clothes, bed linen, etc in something else as he sleeps on his left side and while there is some rash on the right side it is mostly on the left. There isn't a rash anywhere on his body btw.

Today I used filetti and a tiny bit of Fairy non bio fabric conditioner and will see if that makes a difference.

Does anybody have any experience of this or any opinions. Your views very much apprecicated.

my ds[and i]have very sensitive skin so i have to use fairy non bio washing powder and comfort fabric softener or else we get terrible rash, not itchy or irratating just a bit nasty looking.is he be teething?

TheYoungVisiturkeyandstuffing · 29/12/2007 22:06

could it be drool pooling as he's sleeping and he rubs his face in it? Just the wet might irritate his skin, especially if his mattress has a waterproof topsheet.

I don't use fabric conditioner at all and never miss it so it could be worth cutting that out for a few weeks to see if it helps.

TheYoungVisiturkeyandstuffing · 29/12/2007 22:07

Or try washing his sheets without using any detergent at all - unless they are really, really soiled you will be fine for a few weeks and by that time you'll know if it's helping or not.

ChicPea, could it be Slapped cheek or Fifth Disease? Ds3 has just had this and I was blaming LIDL fabric conditioner! It can appear on the face or arms and legs and can come and go. Usually the child is quite well.

Surcare is very good - just try washing with that (I know Tesco sells it, not sure where else) and no fabric conditioner.

Others are ok as well (I find Fairy and Tesco non-bio are fine) but Surcare is especially for excema and sensitive skin conditions. HTH

Slapped cheek picture

Thanks so much for your replies.

Yes he is dribbly and chewing on his fingers so he will have some teeth soon but not sure if it is his saliva that is irritating him. The sheet though doesn't ever feel wet and therefore I don't think he is dribbling excessively.
He has a slight rash just under his right eye as well. As the sheet stays clean for a while, ie no accidents, it gets changed twice a week and maybe that makes it flare up as a freshly laundered sheet is put on yet again.

Thanks again. Will watch out for replies and try your recommendations.

teething makes their skin more sensitve or so my gp told me.

tatt · 29/12/2007 22:57

drop the conditioner and see if that helps.

ChicPea · 05/01/2008 22:41

Well, I have started washing everything in Filleti but its a slow process and he is still wearing things that have been washed in Ecover BUT.... a friend said last Sunday evening that it could be a food allergy so I dropped yoghourt, fromage frais and cheese although saying that he does have Cow and Gate formula but the spots started when he began eating solids but I can't remember when. So he has been off of dairy (except formula) since Monday and his skin is almost clear !!!! I haven't cut out anything else so will wait for his skin to be completely clear and then shall I give him some fromage frais?

ds2 sweats a lot in his sleep (its a trait both him and ds1 have inherited from dp) and always wakes up with a red side to his face when he lays there sweating on the sheets.

he also has a dairy allergy and the hives he gets from that are differewnt to when hes been a sweaty betty face

LilRedWG · 05/01/2008 22:46

Personallym I wouldn't take him off dairy without the guidance of a dietician. I think your best bet for now would be to launder everthing of his (sheets, clothes, etc.) in non-bio washing powder and stop using fabric softener.

My youngest had something like this which I think was related to thumb sucking & resulting drool and teething, but I started to use the Avent Magic Cream and it cleared it up really quickly. Could that be worth a try?

even my big boys (9 and 5) have this prob sometimes and it's purely dribble-related!

ChicPea · 07/01/2008 21:26

But the spots were half circles under his eyes and on the lids. They have practically gone now. Dairy is the only thing I have cut out. Have given him avocado, skinned butter beans with pureed veg, etc and his cheeks are filing out so he is not lacking calories.

Update: I spoke to a friend who said her son broke out in a rash when she changed his formula to to the one for hungrier babies. So she reverted back to the normal one and his skin got better. It then clicked that I changed DS's milk at 6mths which is the same time that I introduced solids. So I went from Cow & Gate Premium to the Follow On milk. So back to the Premium and his skin is now almost perfect. Have given him grated cheese in his pureed veg and have also given him fromage frais and no reaction. So am persuing the Premium theory and giving him that until he can have cows milk at one year.

Hope this helps somebody else who may have a baby with an allergy.

Thank you everyone for your input.
