Hi

I will try keep this brief, doctors suspected he had reflux, he used to cry a lot in pain but that’s calmed down completely by itself. However he cannot sleep laying down, I mean he has to be held when he’s sleeping at all times. If we lay him down (even with his Moses basket at an angle) and he will lay there maximum of 40 mins. He strarts making grunting noises, kicks his legs up, and rubs his face frantically. It starts whilsts he’s a asleep then gets worse until it wakes him up. However he is fine laying flat when he’s playing on his play mat or changing his nappy.

Last week he had blood in his nappy, was referred to paediatric doctor who has put him on Alimentum milk to see if it’s possibly an allergy causing blood. But do you think a cows milk allergy could cause his grunting when trying sleep flat?

Thanks so much

It does sound like reflux. It is perfectly possible, even likely, to have reflux/allergy/ intolerance at the same time.

Yes. If he has reflux (which is common for cmpa babies) then when he lays flat it will be hurting him - basically baby heartburn. You can get wedges and blocks to raise the end of the cot slightly. But it’s a while since I had babies and I don’t know what the current guidance is.

Ds would not sleep lying down until he was put on dairy free formula. He has cmpa, he also had mucus poo, screamed most of the day, fed every hour and a half and had dreadful eczema. Was a different child dairy free.

Yes. Reflux can occur due to the CMPA. My daughter has slept on her side with her head arched right back pretty much since birth. She gets herself into this position and always has done. Apparently it takes pressure off the stomach. All symptoms have died down and she's well settled on the CMPA formula but she favours this sleeping position now!
