And it was my fault I made egg free cake as a practice for his birthday and all was going well the third attempt actually looked like a cake.

I iced it using butter icing with what i thought was normal icing sugar.

Ds dipped his finger in the icing and was promptly sick then his face and mouth including lips stared swelling before my eyes gave piriton but it didn't help ds started going all floppy so i gave epi-pen
Rapid response arrives within minutes gave him nebs and oxygen attatched him to heart monitor

Ambulance arrived gave him second epi-pen and iv fluids and blue light us to hospital
After all day on a ward ds is deemed well enough to be home but I am a reck it turned out i'd used royal icing sugar that contains egg I feel so bad

I'm sat sobbing whilst typing this out ds has had one thing after another wrong this year and I can't take much more

Oh your poor thing. I'm glad your DS is home though. I really don't know much about allergies but didn't want to ignore your post. ((((hugs))))).

wrinklytum · 23/12/2007 20:07

Oh poor you and ds

Glad he is well enough to be discharged.

Must,ve been very scary.

You weren't to know icing sugar had egg in it.

margoandjerry · 23/12/2007 20:08

you poor thing.

No advice or experience but sympathy - especially as you are obviously supermummy with all the cake-making practice.

Hope you are both ok.

alirobins · 23/12/2007 20:13

I usually check everything can't believe I did this I just can't shake the guilty feeling

Thankfully ds doesn't remember much of it

Oh, you poor thing! It's a bit silly that the Royal Icing and Icing Sugar boxes look so similar. I'd never heard of Royal Icing Sugar until quite recently.

You sound like a wonderful thoughtful mum, who had some really bad luck. Hope things take a better turn for you now.

TheChristmasFaggot · 23/12/2007 20:23

This happens with allergic children, sometimes it's our fault, sometimes not. The important bit is how we react - you had a rapid response unit there in minutes. So you handled it well.

Glad DS is feeling OK, at least the recovery is quick. You can now have a nice Christmas.

lottymadbird · 23/12/2007 20:23

the most important thing is that you dealt with it. and really well.

you cannot be super vigilant mum all the time, all you can do is your best and it sounds like you did everything and more, that anyone could.

sorry if you've posted before and i've not seen it but what else has happened?

hope you are ok.

JJ · 23/12/2007 20:24

I've done this. Not exactly the same thing (it was a hamburger with hidden cheese and he was allergic to dairy) but the epi pen and hospital, yes.

Huge sympathies, know how you feel. It happens though - just wanted you to know you're not the only one.

Don't beat yourself up; easier said than done, unfortunately. Try and chill tonight if you can.

alirobins · 23/12/2007 20:28

lottymadbird · 24/12/2007 14:28

god you poor thing, hope christmas is really good for you and he stays well.

tatt · 24/12/2007 20:18

at the time you did everything right, the reaction hits you later when you have time to think. Get yourself a drink or three because you need it - and keep "talking" it out here. It will help to get it out of your system more quickly nut expect to be upset for a few days. Poor you, this is a bad time for those with allergies.

foxinsocks · 24/12/2007 20:19

oh ali, what a rotten time you've had!

Glad he is on the mend and I hope you can relax and enjoy Christmas.

me23 · 24/12/2007 20:31

oh poor ds, glad he's better now have a fab xmas

tatt · 26/12/2007 08:28

Hope you had a good Christmas day and are feeling a bit better now. Merry Christmas everyone.

alirobins · 26/12/2007 15:01

Had a lovely christmas thankyou

Just got to get through all the parties and buffet food now.

Ds will be three on friday and told me today he doesn't want me to make him a cake as I made him sick

Any ideas what I can put a candle in and at least sing happy birthday?

Pull yourself together woman, you are not Superwoman. Dont feel guilty about what you did, be gratefull that you were there to save his life.
My DD has saved two lives in the family this last year and is getting paranoid about it, she made two seperate visits and saved her Granmother from an Anaphyalatic attack (allergy) where Grandmother was kept in for 3 days, and the next visit she was the one to realise that Great-gran had had a stroke, thereby saving her life. But she doesn't want to go up again just in case. We have been telling her to turn it on its head, she saved their lives, if she hadn't been there her Grandmother would definatly be DEAD.

alirobins · 28/12/2007 19:13

well he had a fab birthay and I ade him a giant crispy cake nest with sweets in the middle the kids loved it.

Cake sounds lovely. My egg-allergy DD1 adores chocolate rice krispie cakes.

Mellieandmin · 28/12/2007 19:29

Hi alirobins

So hard with an anaphylactic child, my 9 yo step dd is nut anaphylactic, in fact there is another thread going right now.

We have always encouraged step-dd to bake with us. I know your ds is still very small but it seems to give them a sense of responsibility and ownership for their food. It really boosts her confidence when it comes to foods she is scared of.

Also, when she goes to birthday parties (nut minefield!!) we allow her to bake a birthday cake to give to the birthday boy/girls so that she can have a piece and not feel left out. Also we can rest easy while she is at the party.

There are some fantastic anaphylactic websites and recipe/ingredient books around for eggs/nuts/kiwis etc, are you in contact with them?

Please try not to feel bad, you saved his life, packaging is a minefield and the labelling is still terrible I think. I gave dd a lipbalm for xmas with jojoba oil in it, ohmygosh, how stupid am I?????

So sorry to hear about your accident - and thats exactly what it was - an accident. No-one can be expected never to make a mistake so give yourself a break. You reacted brilliantly and you are clearly an ace mum as I'm going to nick your crispie cake idea for my egg allergic little one!
