My little boy is ten weeks old, he's been on prescription milk since he was 3 weeks old due to milk intolerance, I found out today that my drs have been giving him the wrong milk one that contains cows protein I mentioned to go at his 8 week checkup and injections my issues about his poop consistency and colour thinking the milk wasn't working I've just been thrown from pillar to post, he went to gp again Monday regarding my concerns again, very unsettled they told me it was a tummy bug, I knew in my gut it wasn't as no temperature everything pointing to how he was before put on prescription milk, I contacted my health visitor today who told me that he should be on a different milk to what he is now!! Am I right to be extremely pissed off and feel like the service had let my ten week old little one down? Or am I overreacting

Some milks are based on milk protein but it's broken down so the body doesn't recognise it.
Which milk is it?

So he's supposed to be on sma athera but was given nutrimigena I think that's how you spell it

Sma Athera is another version of nutrimingena. Both are still derived from cows milk, the GP prescribes these before the amino acid based ones, if he wasn’t taking to his milk and it wasn’t improving his stool you should have queried it with the GP for a switch to Neocate

I'm not surprised you are worried! Its your little one! Cousins baby had a milk protein allergy and had the most foul smelling formula! Isn't there a list of ingredients on the container? What are the next steps? Have they prescribed the correct formula now?

PeachesPumpkin · 16/12/2021 22:59

It may just have been a different or cheaper version, can you compare the two to find out?

So there are two ‘types’ of milk for dairy allergic babies. The first is a hydrolysed milk, where the milk protein is broken down into smaller chunks - this is perfectly ok for lots of babies, but some do still have problems. The second kind is a fully synthetic product which is not made from milk at all, these are usually called ‘amino acid’ formulas.

Both standard nutramigen and SMA Althera are hydrolysed formulas, so it’s not the wrong milk per se. Common amino acid formulas could be neocate or puramino (also made by nutramigen).

So he’s not necessarily on the wrong milk, but the option the dr has chosen might be cheaper. If it’s not working then different types of milk are available but sometimes need consultant approval (very very expensive).

In my experience, prescription formulas are important for babies who need them, but are not a ‘magic wand’ cure all. They do improve symptoms but sometimes not completely, and they can sometimes introduce their own issues (many babies hate the taste).

When the dr called me back today he said that he had been having the wrong milk I don't actually get the correct one until tomorrow( if they have it in stock at pharmacy)
