Anyone ever suddenly developed an allergy to wine??

I'm been suffering SO BADLY with nasal congestion for the last month or so. It comes and goes. I noticed that if I drink wine, then overnight and for all of the next day, my congestion goes through the roof - and I am blocked and struggle to breathe - also slightly wheezy. I am now off the wine completely to test my theory, but was curious if anyone had had similar? Also, have noticed I am more sensitive to my dog ( if I cuddle him I can get itchy). But it isn't constant. Mucus (sorry) is completely clear, so deffo no infection.

Yes, it's histamine. It comes and goes with age, I find. I suddenly lost all tolerance. It came back!

samthebordercollie · 21/11/2021 13:26

Yes I had this too, but no longer. If I was going to drink wine I had to take an antihistamine a few hours prior to having a glass.

Karmagoat · 21/11/2021 13:54

I've been having this after drinking prosecco at weekends, didn't put the two together!

ZubinB · 21/11/2021 14:18

Oh my! I knew about the histamine in wine, but it came on so suddenly, that it took me awhile to link the to. The way I have been feeling, a glass of wine is currently just not worth the bother... I wonder if gin is ok? This might be a blessing in disguise TBH, as the weight has been creeping on... I wonder if my allergen intolerance levels are genuinely up, as my dog is 10yrs old, and he has never given me any grief. I have been feeling shocking - it's so good to know why.

How have you been feeling and how long has it lasted??

also, any anti-histamines I have taken haven't helped - I have just had to ride it out - normally 24 hours

I have noticed that just one small glass of white wine gives me a terrible morning headache, right at the base of my skull. I’m not dehydrated because I’m drinking water & squash all day, plus it’s genuinely only one small glass of wine. I blame menopause in my case.

ChippyDucks150 · 21/11/2021 14:23

I am exactly like this too op! Last night I was drinking beers though, and the exact same reaction, it only cleared at lunchtime today.
Antihistamines make no difference to me, but I do have various allergies, such as house dust and dogs.

Karmagoat · 21/11/2021 14:24

@ZubinB mine is sinus congestion but also sinus pain and headache, my jaw clicks pretty bad too, lasts for a few days. Im guessing it must be linked cos I didn't drink at all last week and was fine.

Lupee · 21/11/2021 14:54

Yes. I think it's histamines as beer is bad too. But I'm completely fine with gin, vodka and baileys.

Maflingo · 21/11/2021 14:59

I get the same issue too. I haven't had wine for a while but got given a bottle of sparkling wine this weekend and the congestion was ridiculous! Sad times as I enjoy a glass of wine now and then but will have to remember to stick to gin for now.

WineAway · 21/11/2021 15:07

I always had a mild version of this but peri menopause symptoms ramped it up. What age are you?

ZubinB · 21/11/2021 15:12

Indeed sad times. Hoping it won't be forever. I'm 43

I feel for you OP! I don’t get congested or headachy, but my top lip starts to itch and burn and so does my upper back. It happens with wine (including sparkling) or beer, and curiously not all the time, and not all types. So, I just have to sip it and see. Very tiresome as I don’t ever know if I can share a bottle of wine. It got to the point where I kept a long ruler hidden in the dining room so I could reach my upper back! Much safer to stay off all alcohol. Except in chocolates 😁

ZubinB · 21/11/2021 15:25

@LadySpratt
I don't get any immediate symptoms. I switched from red to white on Friday to see if colour mattered; on Saturday I woke with a nose that felt like it was stuffed with cotton wool! And a mouth as dry as the desert! It didn't shift until late evening. Horrible Confused

It can be sulphites and you can get lower sulphite wine. Like this one

www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/all-wine/sainsburys-cabernet-sauvignon--so-organic-75cl

But I'm pretty sure with me it's histamines.

Nutellaoneverything · 21/11/2021 18:00

I've found the exact same thing here too OP, apart from not with wine or beer or bourbon (least favourite drinks) but with scotch and cognac Sad

Sometimes it clears during a brisk walk outside but seems to come back when I come back home.

Gutted as there's nothing better than a glass of cognac in front of the fire 🔥 😫

Nutellaoneverything · 21/11/2021 18:04

I sleep terribly after a cognac or scotch and get a cracking hangover after, even if I've only had a small amount even though I usually have a v high tolerance.
It's only started in the last year during a very stressful time and hasn't stopped. Hope it goes away I'm only 3

Scarby9 · 21/11/2021 18:09

A friend developed an allergy to salycilate - or natural aspirin.
She was told to avoid most fruits and vegetables, large numbers of herbs and spices, fruit juice and wine.
After a while, she found that taking an anti-histamine in advance meant she could have a couple of glasses of wine.
The allergy gradually subsided and she was able to go back to eating normally. It seems to flare up again every two or three years but she knows how to handle it now.

CluelessHamster · 21/11/2021 18:10

I rarely drank anyway but, Christmas before last, I had some prosecco and my face went bright red and hot. It wore off after an hour or so but it was a bit alarming and I've not wanted to risk it since.

Cheesymonster · 21/11/2021 18:14

My face goes immediately bright red and hot after a small amount of wine. This is very recent (I am 45). Haven’t stopped drinking it though Grin

Sugarandtime · 21/11/2021 18:17

Yes, started with peri menopause

Snuggledupforwinter · 21/11/2021 18:22

Sadly, yes. No wine for me - terrible digestive problems on just 1 glass. Half a glass of champagne gives me numb lips and terrible headache after 5 mins!
So I stick to Gin , prosecco or cider, which fingers crossed, still seems to like me!
