Scratching while changing nappy of eczema baby

Hi, DS is 10 months and although his skin has improved on the whole he is still very itchy especially when you reveal his skin during a nappy change. We put socks on him but he is now dexterous enough to take them off and the whole thing is a nightmare with a very wriggly, scratchy baby. What do other people use please?

dh used to hold dd1 hands during nappy changes.

I've got a selection of toys next to the change mat. None of them work for long so I start with socks on the hands, then give her a toy when she's taken those off. Sometimes letting her hold the socks and chew on them works better than putting them on her hands. Like your DS, her eczema is not too bad these days, so i wonder if the scratching is more a habit than anything.

DD1 had eczema on her bot, which she used to scratch until it bled. We got some hydro-cortizone cream from the GP which cleared it up, and it has never returned.

I do what Beatrice suggests, try to keep him distracted while out of the nappy. I also found it curious that after a year of misery dealing with severe eczema, now that the thing has cleared out in the worst areas he is getting it in the nappy area that was never affected in the past. I was tempted to use hidrocortisone/protopic in that area but the dermatologist advised against it (should not be applied to covered areas), so what I am doing at the moment is applying a layer of sudocream while he is wet after the bath, and let him free of the nappy until the cream gets absorbed (to avoid clogging the nappy). It works fine but as soon as I miss a couple of days the thing is back.

Hope it helps

Thank you for your replies everyone - I was just hoping that there were some magic stay-on gloves out there somewhere but sadly not!
