Lactose free or naturally lactose free?

I believe that I respond badly to lactose (deduced from wholly unscientific tests I’ve carried out on myself). So I now only eat soya or lactose free dairy (ie products which have actively had the lactose removed) which is great: no symptoms at all with this approach.

I recently discovered however that some cheeses are naturally lactose free so began to eat them. My symptoms have flared straight back up.

So my question is: is there a difference between fake lactose free and naturally lactose free? Or is it not the lactose at all?

If anyone has any ideas I’d be grateful.

Do they not just have lower lactose rather than being lactose free?

The internet and the lady behind the counter said the lactose was essentially gone… maybe there is a trace…?

Lactose intolerance is different from dairy intolerance. Maybe it’s dairy.

But OP said she was ok with lactose free dairy products which will still contain cows milk protein

Yes def not dairy. Lactose free varieties of (milk) cheese are fine.
