Baby eczema

I'm looking for any recommendations on how to treat baby eczema. I seem to have tried everything but my baby's skin is still so bad (awaiting dermatology appointment but it's not until January!) GP just advised steroid cream but I'm not keen to keep using it (thins skin)

We have tried lots of thick emollients (the thick wax types you get in a tub). These all make the skin worse: 50/50 white parafin, Cetraben, Epaderm.

We have tried 'oatmeal' emollients - aveeno, aproderm

We have tried cetreban bath oil and aqueous cream.

I've tried burtbees baby ointment, sudecrem, coconut oil - made the skin SOOO much worse!!

Currently using Dermol in the bath, apply Dermol as a cream after bath before bed. I use Epaderm cream (not the thick emollient, the lighter cream) 6 times per day.

I apply the cream downwards in the direction of hair growth. I pat the skin dry when he comes out of the bath. And wash my hands thoroughly before applying creams.

He has been diagnosed with cows milk allergy which has caused the eczema. We've been on Neocate amino acid formula for 1 month but no improvement (we were on nutramigen for 2 months before this)

Is there anything you have tried to help your baby's eczema?

I am so sorry your baby has this. We've had to deal with 2 generations of eczema and have tried most things you have as well. I am assuming you wash his clothes/bedding and anything else he comes in close contact with, in non perfumed dermatologically safer washing powder/liquid? Also use natural fibres for his clothes and bedding etc, make sure he is not too warm as this can make it worse. I know this may sound strange but how often do you bathe him? I didn't know this until my 3rd baby, that it's not necessary to bathe babies everyday at all. Their skin is so delicate that bathing can strip it of natural oils leading to it drying out and causing flare ups to be more likely. At the end of the day, it is an individual thing, what works for one baby may not work for yours so it's trial and error. I would not use steroid cream too much either but maybe it's unavoidable until your dermatology appointment.

Honestly, in my experience, a big factor is simply growing out of the worst of it as time goes on and together with whatever the dermatologist advises, hopefully that will mean the best results for your baby. Only 2 of family members were identified with particular food allergies that made them flare up. Hang in there.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I wash his clothes in Surecare (think it's called that) which is non-perfumed and advised for eczema. We do bathe each day so maybe we should reduce to every other day and see if that helps. Thank you :)

I would actually cut down bathing to once per week. They actually don't need it any more frequently than that. To and tall every other day and a full bath once per week. Can work wonders for skin with eczema. Give it a try!

Thanks I will try this. Would you recommend this for a 6 month old baby?

DD has eczema, we figured out it was food linked. Worth keeping a food diary just in case you can identify any food triggers

Hi, just wanted to say that at your dermatology appointment they will most definitely be prescribing steroids, most likely strong ones if the eczema is bad. Sometimes eliminating the triggers alone will not remove the current flare up. Steroids will help in removing the current flare up.

Hey just wondered if it got better?

What you have written is exactly the path we are going. Tried exactly the same creams....nothing is working.

Really hope you found a solution for your little one
