CMPA and weaning

DS is nearly 5 months and EBF. We tried him on a bottle of formula to give me a break and his face broke out in hives straight away. Changed brands and the same thing happened and he projectile vomited a few times that night.

GP has prescribed him some dairy free formula to try but all she said about weaning was to make sure we have piriton in the house. Does anyone have any tips on how to go about introducing dairy? My first was baby led weaned and such an easy baby for food so I've no idea what I need to be doing!

Sounds like an IGE dairy allergy. If your GP advised you give dairy and have piriton nearby this sounds like dangerous advice. Please seek a 2nd opinion, ideally from an allergist as the next reaction could be even more severe.

@BrownEyedSquirrel this is what I was worried about, she seemed so blasé about it! I can't afford to go private, how would I go about doing this on the NHS?

You should be able to get a referral to a dietitian through your health visitors. Mine had a few months waiting list for a group zoom call but they did give me some information to start me off. Also join the CMPA breastfeeding group on Facebook as there is loads of great info on there.

I'm afraid I'm not too sure as we ended up in A&E at 6 months when my cmpa baby was exposed to dairy. They organised for us to see the paediatric allergist that week. Our GP was useless and didn't seem to understand allergies either :(

@BrownEyedSquirrel I'm so sorry, that must have been really scary!

Thanks @Doublechocolatetiffin they sound like good places to start. It just seems daft to me to try him with something I know he's allergic to!
