hello, my dd (13 weeks old) has had a hard time recently. She turned from a happy baby into a very colicky, sicky and screamy baby at about 6 weeks (although we'd struggled with feeds and persistent diarrhoea since birth). After 2 weeks of this behaviour she developed a rash on her face and neck which was very dry. I changed her formula to a soy based formula which cleared up all of her problems and so I kept her on it for 3 weeks. Last weekend we put her back onto her original formula to see if this was the cause of her problems. The poor little love had terrible wind pains and diarrhoea almost immediately, but we persisted thinking it might just be a "changeover" problem. Then the eczema reappeared 3-fold. She is covered in the stuff, all over her body but worse behind her ears and over her head and face. I took her to the doctors who said it sounds like a milk protein allergy and prescribed nutromigena(sp?). However, I have a couple of questions which I wonder if someone can help me with?

DD seems to hate the taste and will only drink at most 3oz per feed (she usually drinks 5oz per feed) - will she get used to it if I persevere or should I take her back to the doctors if she is still rejecting it in a few days? if so, are there any alternatives?

Also, her eczema only took about 5 hours to arrive when putting her back on her original formula, but is still there at the moment (although she's only been on the nutromigena for 24 hours) - but how long will it take for the eczema to clear? I am using E45 cream to sooth it which seems to help.

ANY advice welcome, I am a first-time mum with very few allergies of my own or in my family so finding it a bit difficult to cope with. Thanks

Hi Kerri, my DD1 was also prescribed Nutramigen and I have read about a few other MNers having difficulty weaning their lo's.

On the advice of our peadiatrician we introduced 1 scoop of Nutramigan to her feed and reduced normal formula by 1 scoop and upped the number of scoops of Nutramigen every few days until there was no formula.

Worked for us.

The exzema will probably take a couple of weeks to disappear. If it is bothering the baby I would ask your GP to prescribe something stronger than E45.

Bath emolients work really well and stay away from anything fragranced (shampoo/washing powder etc).

Kerri28 · 04/12/2007 11:01

thanks lairy, shes taking it at the moment, not particularly enjoying it, but whilst its going down i'm happy! if shes still struggling in a week or so though, i might ask for a change!

Hiya, my bb was put on Nutramagren after 5 wks of sream & pain from Cow & Gate & Cow & Gate soya, he would only take an oz an hour for the first 24hours but slowly he got used to the taste. Hes now 15wks and the only problem I'm having now is that its too watery for him & causung a reflux. I tried him last week on a normal milk with lactose in it and within 24 hours the screaming new born appeared again, so he was put back on Nutramagren. Good luck

I don't know why that message appeared twice, sorry

Hi - yes the advice to mix it in ever-increasing quantities with a more palatable formula worked for my DD. I ended up using a 50:50 mix of Nutramigen / Farleys Soya as that seems to suit her. She absolutely loves it!

Apparently a lot of dairy-allergic babies are also allergic to soya though, so if you think there may be problems with the soya then 100% Nutramigen would obviously be best.

For a dairy-free diet, calcium-fortified rice milk is useful when weaning (though you will be advised not to have it as a 'main' milk substitute).

No advice re the eczema though sorry, my DD's only symptoms were vomiting so no experience.

Good luck, sounds like you're doing well despite all the difficulties

well, she's got used to it, is drinking more than she ever did of other formulas and is now.......sleeping through the night!!! I am impressed

Hi my DD was given Nutramagen however wouldnt drink it at all, DD did really well on SMA LF but after about a year or so while it seemed to upset her tummy so she was changed to Infasoy. Which she also didnt mind.

I found weaning dificult but with lots of support from the paediatritian and a nutritionalist (apparently I cant spell!!!! ) then we got through it. DD is now nearly 3 and still Dairy Free.

It does get easier!

lilmissmummy · 13/12/2007 18:19

oh and the eczema does go- dd was given Johnsons wheat cream (or something like that) and a bath oil and it cleared up in no time.

Now I know exactly when she has had dairy because her eczema flares up

sb6699 · 14/12/2007 10:28

Good to hear from you Kerri. Just to let you know, my DD1 is now 3 and eats and drinks whatever she likes with no ill effects.

I was told by GP most children do grow out of these allergies - eventually!
