Hello, my four year old boy has various allergies including peanuts and treenuts. We now think he probably has asthma too. I feel so upset about this. Especially as I've read that a peanut allergy and asthma is a really bad combination. Please can someone tell me that it's not as bad as it seems. Would love to hear some positive stories, especially from grown ups who've had it all their lives and are doing ok!

Thanks a lot xxxxxxxxx

My dd has a peanut allergy and asthma. At the age of 11, she has never had an allergic reaction and only uses her inhaler about once every 3 months. It's all been very manageable.

Also, it's very common for kids who have allergies to also have asthma.

My ds too, he's now 21. Had a big reaction when he was diagnosed and ended up in hospital,he was 2. Carries epi pens and antihistamine.

Thank you. Does your DD have allergic-asthma then? I'm guessing that's what my son has rather than non-allergic asthma.

Thank you. Any reactions since the first? A couple when he was 6 and 7 and antihistamine took it down.

My daughter has various allergies including a life threatening milk allergy and asthma (as well as lots of other health issues). She’s had a few incidents over the years but it’s been manageable. I think nuts is easier than milk as milk is everywhere so try not to worry.

My dd is 15 now and has asthma, eczema and allergies. She has outgrown some of her allergies but has hayfever and reacts to dust, some fruit and some indefinable things.
Her worst allergy was to egg, in particular raw egg. It caused her to swell up and break out in hives. Luckily though it never seemed to trigger an asthma attack although her eczema often flared badly after a reaction.
Her asthma is well controlled these days which is a great.
We found Montelukast very good for her asthma/allergies.

DS is also allergic to peanuts and other nuts and has asthma. So far we manage with antihistamine syrup but avoid peanuts like the plague. He's 8. It really worries me he will have a major reaction one day and doesn't have an epipen

Exdp has asthma and peanut allergy, he is 45 and never had any serious issues that aren't related to his weight.

Dd is 8, asthmatic and has a whole range of allergies (although not nuts) the only really serious reactions have been to pineapple and a virus she contracted and the hospital gave her ibuprofen which she then had a reaction too.

Honestly it's never as bad as Google suggests.

I am peanut allergic and asthmatic. I also was diagnosed with tree nut allergy following skin prick tests in childhood but retested 2 years ago and seem to have outgrown that. Both asthma and allergy were a pain in the bum growing up - was in and out of hospital with my asthma. I managed to successfully avoid peanuts for 20+years until this January when I skim read ingredients on a pre packaged salad from m and s. This is after living and travelling in SE Asia after the past few years where I managed to avoid peanuts! I quickly realised, used epipen and had an ambulance come and administer intravenous antihistamine followed by a few hours observation in hospital.
Memories of the allergy growing up - I was overly worried about eating at one point in my teens and would only eat really plain things/ was afraid of eating out, was crazy about only eating specific brands so I would say be careful with messaging and scary news - its important to teach your son to be careful but not to be scared of food.
Now I love eating out, awareness is pretty good now in this country and I've also managed it well when travelling abroad.
