I've tried to put this thought to the back of my mind but I can't.
I was wondering if anyone else could weigh in, to give me perspective.
When DS was born be was nursing well but hardly passing urine. The midwives wanted us to stay in hospital but agreed to send us home on Day 2 if we monitored nappies.
On Day 3 he had hardly passed any urine and my milk hadn't come through so he had ONE formula feed.
He then passed normal urine and was exclusively BF until 6 months.
At weaning we discovered life threatening allergies to dairy, egg, legumes, fish and nuts. We have no family history of allergies.
Our doctor told me that the one-off formula feed at Day 3 could have caused a cow's milk protein allergy which led to his eczema at 3 months. This eczema could have resulted in additional food allergies if food proteins touched his skin (if on someone's hands or if in the air). I've since read several published studies that confirm this. The advice is to continue to feed formula at least 3 times a week if it was given in the first days.
Thinking I've caused his allergies (which massively restrict his life) is breaking me. I can't get passed it. I just wish I could turn back time.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?
Or maybe you also fed your little one a single formula feed in their first days of life and they DIDN'T develop food allergies?
I'm feeling especially shit lately because we just had another check up and his test results are getting worse and not better. Ugh.
